In my wedding vows to Blake in 2016, I thanked him for giving me Todd, who cracked open a part of my heart I didn’t know existed. Todd showed me that unconditional love is real and can be conveyed without words (though that didn’t stop me from telling him I loved him 100 times a day). He also taught me the limitless joy an animal can bring into your life.
Last month, we were lucky enough to celebrate Todd’s 18th birthday. Truthfully, he was a very old dog for a very long time. Over the last few years, he lost his sight, his hearing and almost half his teeth, but he always came back strong, with his indomitable spirit intact—the furry little embodiment of resilience.
4 days after Todd’s party, he devoured his last meal of leftover birthday cake with the same gleeful, maniacal energy he always used to have chasing tennis balls. ‘Til the end, Todd had basically 2 modes: Sleeping Angel/my perfect pillow partner, and Hungry Bear/complete Crazy Boy.
Blake and I always (half) joked that Todd would outlive us all, and that if he didn’t… well, we’d probably have to be institutionalized. Though we’ll miss him every day, we were blessed that he was ours. Being 1/2 of Todd’s Dads was the greatest gift I’ve ever been given, and the honour and privilege of my life.
