I have followed the events of the weekend with horror and the utmost worry as I see the situation in Israel/Palestine worsening to unimaginable depths. Hamas’ attack on the Israeli civilian population is an outrageous crime, which I condemn fiercely. The death of so many in southern Israel and Gaza is a tragedy that will loom for a long time to come. The extent of this human tragedy is not only in lives lost but also hostages taken, homes destroyed, and communities devastated. An Israeli siege on Gaza constitutes a policy of collective punishment, which is a violation of human rights. Edward Said and I always believed that the only path to peace between Israel and Palestine is a path based on humanism, justice, equality and an end to the occupation rather than military action, and I find myself today grounded in this belief more strongly than ever. In these trying times and with these words, I stand in solidarity with all victims and their families. — Daniel Barenboim
Bruckner by the West-Eastern @divanorchestra & Maestro @DBarenboim to end a PBS @NewsHour Special Report. The report was broadcast yesterday evening in the United States, and it concluded with an excerpt of Bruckner’s 9th symphony from our 20th-anniversary concert at the Berlin Philharmonie in October 2019. The segment also made reference to the origins of the project founded in 1999 by Edward W. Said and Maestro Barenboim, as a need to seek an alternative response to the conflict. 📲 You can find the link to the report on our Facebook page, as well as on the PBS NewsHour website or on its YouTube channel.
Yesterday, Daniel Barenboim led the Orchestra of the @barenboimsaidakademie in its first concert of the season. The concert held a significance far beyond the music. It was an expression of humanism, allowing people to come together in empathy and understanding. 📷 Stefan Maria Rother

Today, we pay tribute to Edward W. Said on the 20th anniversary of his passing. “Edward W. Said and I shared a strong belief that making music should be an essential part of social life, and that music plays a major role in influencing and shaping who we are as human beings,” says Daniel Barenboim. In 1999, this shared spirit led to the birth of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra that has since evolved into a world-renowned ensemble. In 2016, the United Nations recognized the important work of the Divan by naming it a United Nations Global Advocate for Cultural Understanding, making it the first orchestra to receive this honor. Over the course of these two decades, several projects were founded as a continuation of the spirit and mission of the Divan, such as the @barenboimsaidakademie in Berlin or the Barenboim-Said Center for Music in Ramallah. As we honor the memory of Edward W. Said, we also celebrate the enduring legacy that music education and cultural exchange have a profound impact on breaking down barriers that once seemed insurmountable. 📸 Edward W.
