“The Driver Lives alone. Chauffeured getaways for 12 years. Best Wheelman in the city. Works off the street. Never asks a question. Always wears a dark suit. And never wears a tie.” This is the opening introduction to Walter Hill’s screenplay and his description of the titular character, The Driver, who would go on to be played by Ryan O’Neal. I have loved Ryan O’Neal in many films. He was the star of a number of classics and favourites, especially for me: ‘What’s Up Doc?’, ‘Paper Moon,’ and ‘Barry Lyndon.’ But of course, I am obsessed and endlessly inspired by Walter Hill’s 1978 film ‘The Driver,’ a diamond-tight, minimalist masterpiece that unfolds flawlessly over a succinct 91 minutes. Walter Hill had written the film with Steve McQueen in mind, and after he passed, (“I don’t want to do another car movie”), the script made its way to Charles Bronson and then finally to O’Neal, a super-hot actor at the time, but perhaps not one who you think of as the lead of a tough crime film. And yet, it’s precisely because O’Neal is the more unlikely lead that the character becomes infinitely more beguiling, with the look of faded playboy glamour and an inscrutable, taciturn presence. I truly love O’Neal as this mysterious walking question mark in the centre of this crime story, so much so that it inspired my own script about an unlikely wheelman. Ryan, thank you for all the great films and the inspiration. RIP.

What a fantastic night at BFI Southbank with two packed screenings of #TheWorldsEnd for its 10th anniversary. So lovely to be onstage with @simonpegg @friedgold and Eddie Marsan, and bonus fight choreographer @damienwalters. Thanks too for @ctah1976’s expert moderating and all the great staff at the @britishfilminstitute who make this all so easy and fun. And, most importantly, thanks to the audiences! We had a total blast. If you were there, please leave any thoughts on the Q&A and seeing the movie again. Love you all. Let’s boo boo x Photos by @eamonnmc @gettyimages and also @darren_baker_photography @GEMDOLLA @LUCYS359 @lizep71.

Hello! Here’s my TOP 50 SONGS OF 2023. Please, play loud and in order, but most importantly… ENJOY! As ever, it’s my total pleasure to share my end of year playlist for 2023, with fifty-ish tracks* I’ve been loving in the last twelve months. Do let me know what you love, especially if you hadn’t heard it before. The link to Spotify & Apple Music versions is in the bio, but it’s important to add, if you love any of these songs or artists, please support them in substantive ways which can generate them real income: buy a ticket, some merch or a physical record. Always – if you can – look after the music-makers x Featuring: @sparks_official @ebtgofficial @blurofficial @byopband @therollingstones @thehives @fizzwetit @realstepz @antonyszmierek @frasertsmith @kaetempest @altingunband @idlesband @lcdsoundsystem @thechemicalbrothers @beck @jungle4eva @young_fathers @mikeskinnerltd @iggypopofficial @metalhorse_tor @orlagartland @dreamwife @oliviarodrigo @100gecs @paramore @wetlegband @englishteacherband @yardactband @officialherbalpert @bccamplight @thelemontwigs @blondshell @gaz_coombes @killermike @andre3000 @erynallenkane @joyanonymous @jockstrap_music @siphotheizm @romyromyromy @metric @lolayounggg @kelela @yazminlacey @thebeachesband @gretelhanlyn @fontainesband @nadineshah @xboygeniusx @rvg____ @baritaliaa @thewaeveofficial @grahamcoxon @roseelinor @fatdogfatdogfatdog_ @mozart.estate @karakara @laurenevemayberry @honeymoon @mitskileaks @spoontheband and (!) @thebeatles. (*Yes, I’m aware that it’s 5 tracks over 50. I’m also breaking cardinal playlist rules by having one artist twice (bookending) and a few songs that were very late 2022, but honestly, who cares? When was the last year we had new Beatles and new Stones? 1970? Great music is great music. BYE!)

Was thrilled to be at the London premiere of Michael Mann’s @ferrarithemovie on Monday. As a director, he has been a huge inspiration to me over the years, with his superhuman attention to detail and sleek, inventive shooting style. Any Mann film is going to be pushing the boundaries of what is possible on a technical level, and so, whenever he makes a film, I pay attention. I can’t be the only film director who has watched sections of ‘Heat’ obsessively to see how the hell the crew pulled it all off*. His new film had another element that was of keen interest to me as it tells the story of Enzo Ferrari and him betting his company on the outcome of Mille Miglia, a treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy. From a screenplay by the late Troy Kennedy Martin (writer of The Italian Job), it shows the deadly nature of the race in hair-raising detail. Not surprisingly, the driving scenes are intense, visceral, and thrillingly captured. I was particularly interested to see these incredible sequences as three of my ‘Baby Driver’ team worked on the movie: stunt coordinator @rpnagle, camera operator Roberto De Angelis (pictured!), and first assistant camera E.J. Misisco. All three did an incredible job with the period racing scenes. At the afterparty, I had a TON of questions on how certain coverage was done. Needless to say, Team Ferrari outdid themselves. Check out the film on the biggest and loudest screen you can when it opens later this month. Michael remains The Mann**. *It would seem with great difficulty and hard work by all involved. But as Jon Bernthal said to me on the ‘Baby Driver’ set; “If this shit was easy, every asshole would do it.” **Apologies for the pun.

@damienwalters is an ace stuntman, fight co-ordinator and director who I had the pleasure of working with on ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs The World’ and ‘The World’s End’. Damien has also created roles in the film industry from the gymnastic community in Derby that he came up through and still works with. And now the very gym this amazing community has come from is in peril. I’ll let Damien tell you more about the amazing work they’ve done and how you could help. The link to donate is on his page and in my stories. I can vouch for the amazing kids that have already come through this gym as many worked on ‘The World’s End’ and now have careers as stuntmen in major movies. It’s an incredible, inspiring place and needs saving. Here’s some words from Damien to explain more: “Our gym is a lifeline for many kids, and a second home. That is why I still coach there, and without it I would not be where I am today. We try and teach children that there is a life and career after their sport, but more importantly that they always have a place to belong. Our gym has the evidence to prove the first part; a lot of our young performers now work in the film industry as stunt doubles for Spiderman, Captain America, Doctor Strange, James Bond, and many more. Now I want to prove the second part too. But that is unfortunately when we found out our current gym is getting knocked down. I immediately started looking for a new place and found a huge building in the centre of Derby, that we can run not only gymnastics from but lots of different sports such as trampolining, breakdancing, martial arts and more. We have this building now, but need to begin the hard work, to get this place to a workable condition.” Check out the link to the GoFundMe page in my stories and @damienwalters’s bio to learn more. Thank you.
