I once said the things you do when you’re young that you get fired for are the same things that, years later, they give you lifetime achievement awards for. I thought it was going to be a failure. When you make a film going against the grain of what’s going on at the time, those kind of films are tough. You’re not doing what everyone expects or wants you to do.
It’s impossible to imagine what a proud Daddy I am, not only for SOFIA’s latest work PRISCILLA, but for all of her great films!
Which one is your favorite?
Happy Birthday to my longtime friend and extraordinary colleague @martinscorsese_

This week marks the 40th anniversary of Rumble Fish.
I made Rumble Fish as an art film for kids. I wanted to demonstrate all the tools, choices, and wonders of cinema for young people. At the beginning I felt I had failed, as the film certainly didn’t overwhelm at the box-office, but later I learned it had done exactly what I had hoped: influence a young audience to want to make personal film and even to write novels.
For some mysterious reason, the film remained for almost a year in some theaters in South America and inspired many young artists to be novelists and filmmakers. This was attested to by the film “Locaciones: Buscando a Rusty James” a personal documentary about the influence of Rumble Fish, and was a milestone of Alberto Fuguet’s creative work, as a writer and filmmaker.
To me, there is no higher achievement than inspiring young people to create, just as I was inspired by so many before me.

In honor of Halloween, a post about “Bram Stoker’s Dracula”.
When I was a 19-year-old drama camp counselor, I would read my campers the original 1897 version of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” to put them to sleep, so I could then sneak out to visit my girlfriend who was a counselor at a nearby girls camp.
I loved as a kid to go with my older brother to see the Dracula movies, including “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.” Our favorite Dracula, believe it or not, was John Carradine. But those movies didn’t really adapt the book.
It was an overall great experience making “Bram Stoker’s Dracula.” Gary Oldman portrayed the old Count in a new and innovative way.

I first became aware of Ridley Scott with his film THE DUELLISTS. I was impressed, and realizing he was my contemporary began following his work, which was prodigious to say the least.
One after the other, different styles, themes — all ambitious and never stopping, absolutely great films like BLADE RUNNER, THELMA & LOUISE, ALIEN, and BLACK HAWK DOWN. I realize he has been knighted for his extraordinary work, but he should be given a Dukedom for such outstanding quality output. I never really got to meet him, aside from a few phone calls arranging the bargain sale of the neon sets from my own ONE FROM THE HEART, which live on forever in his unforgettable BLADE RUNNER. Ridley’s MATCHSTICK MEN featured another great performance from our own Nicolas Cage!
Sir Ridley is actually a couple of years older than me, yet his amazing productivity remains with films like THE LAST DUEL and an upcoming sequel to GLADIATOR.
There have been rare artists who astounded everyone with their best work while in their eighties, like Giuseppe Verdi, but we must take our hats off to Ridley. I am excited to see his new film in IMAX, NAPOLEON, and have no doubt it is spectacular!
I don’t remember ever doing this, but I see my beard is black so it must’ve been a long time ago. In those days it was common to do commercials that wouldn’t be shown in America.
I agree with the tagline: “Good sound affects the heart”
@michelgondry made the amazing film ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND. To say it was a great film is saying too little to describe it. Yet, this extraordinarily gifted artist has been unable to realize his wish, to make a film of Philip K. Dick’s UBIK. Now that he’s abandoned the project, we who love cinema are the losers. If there’s any way at all that he can relight the passion to go on with it, we will all be the winners.
Happy belated birthday to the great Terry Malick! (aside from all else, the funniest person I’ve ever met.)
I know that humor is a sure sign of intelligence. Terry and I once travelled as tourists, and I remember I never could stop laughing. So much so, that I later asked Terry if he’d come to the Philippines to appear in Apocalypse Now as the ‘rivets salesman’ from Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, and he said he would. But my source of funding was cut off, and I had to stop shooting. Nevertheless, his own body of work is monumental!
Ryan O’Neal has passed, deserving of praise certainly for his fine work in BARRY LYNDON, WHAT’S UP DOC and PAPER MOON. Our families are united in tragedy, which is another expression of love. Rest in peace, bless you Ryan.
A brief message about LOVE…
I send my cheers & highly recommend the revival of the play “Danny and the Deep Blue Sea” starring Aubrey Plaza and Chris Abbott, written by John Patrick Shanley, and directed by Jeff Ward.
I had the pleasure of directing @plazadeaubrey on the set of @megalopolisfilm and can say that “wonderful” isn’t a wonderful-enough word to describe what it’s like working with her or her impact our film!

@gracevanderwaal is a multi-talented songwriter, musician, and actor whom I am so lucky to have worked with on @megalopolisfilm
Years ago, I was fascinated by the OLED TV process. I researched how it was made and learned that only one company in Korea was able to do that process. In contact with them I met a wonderful gentleman, David VanderWaal, who over time became a family friend. He told me about his young daughter who was writing songs and gaining notice. One who noticed Grace was another “kid” who along with my granddaughter @giancarla.coppola was enjoying being on the set of BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA, @juliamhhart , daughter of its screenwriter James V. Hart. Julia grew up to become a film director, and after Grace VanderWaal won the 11th season of “Americas Got Talent” (at age 12), Julia cast Grace to star in her Disney film @stargirl .
All these threads came together, eventually resulting in casting Grace to star in and write songs for MEGALOPOLIS.
The passing of a great American talent and humanitarian, Norman Lear, is genuinely observed by many. His accomplishments are numerous, but possibly outweighed by his kindness and generosity.
During my financial crisis in the aftermath of ONE FROM THE HEART and losing my studio, Norman offered help and in fact loaned me unhesitatingly $500,000 with little or no paperwork. I proudly paid it back a few years later and I will always remember Mr. Lear’s noble gesture. May he rest in the tranquility he so deserves.
