One of my favorite fighters was fireman, Jim Flynn, although small for a heavyweight at 5′ 9″ he fought all the greats of his era regardless of race including Jack Johnson, Jack, Dempsey and Sam Langford, and many many more. He was called the Pueblo fireman because he worked for the railroad as a fireman, but actually he was born in Hoboken, New Jersey of Italian descent his real name being Andrew Chiariglione. One of the great characters of the golden age of boxing. #firemanjimflynn #hobokinnj
To those who have interest in what I do in boxing and my collection. I have been collecting boxing memorabilia for close to 50 yrs not as a dealer but as a collector and historian ,!its a very small group of us that collect boxing of this era so at times we will trade or swap items of interest . I very rarely deal with dealers I find most bottom feeders and dishonest and despicable. I mostly deal with collectors or friends that cherish these items and keep the hobby alive. So if you have any memorobilia of that era that you don’t want to see go by the wayside or the dump, let me know. I will pay for great items. Not interested in Ali or modern fighters. God bless and have a happy new year.
One of true iron men of boxing Battling Nelson was feared by most fighters of his era he would fight anywhere and anyone from 20 rds to 60 rds and these were 3 minute rds no problem. Doctors studies showed he had abnormal thick skull and such a slow heartbeat that he would be getting warmed up after 20 rds. He stated in a newspaper article I’ll get him after 30, rounds that is. The famous writer Jack, London called him, the abysmal brute for his endurance, roughness and heartless pursuit in a fight. These were three minute rounds, wearing 4 ounce horse hair gloves mouthpieces were not allowed at that time and he fought everybody regardless of color for he did not draw the color line, he was an amazing specimen of durability. He was born Oscar Matthew Neilson in 1882 in Denmark and raised in hedgewitch Illinois later in life he lost most of his money and lived in dire poverty and finally ended up in a charity ward where he died in Chicago in 1954. #battlingnelson #boxing

A very rare poster from 1904 in Philadelphia notice the names of mostly Irish fighters who dominated the sport at that time along with with Italian and Jewish fighters. Most posters have not survived as they were torn down and another put up for the next fight as boxing and baseball dominated all sports. This is almost 120 yrs old! #boxing #irish #philadelphia #1904
This is an original photo in the original frame around 1899 of Sailor Tom Sharkey, who was a heavyweight contender of that era and a very interesting man. Although only 5 foot seven he fought James, J. Jeffries, and all the great heavyweights of his era, he was extremely strong and and fearless in his quest to become Heavyweight champion there’s a book out on him call I fought them all that is extremely interesting. Sailor Tom Sharkey, one of the interesting people in the golden age of boxing. #boxing #sailortomsharkey #tomsharkey @paulspadaforaofficial
The Cambria boxing arena in Kensington on Kensington and Somerset. Was a famous boxing arena from 1917 to 1963. Somerset of the greatest fighters in history fought in this local club also called The Blood Pit. We filmed Rocky in that neighborhood which is now sad to say a zombie land of drug addicts and urban blight. At one time it was a properous blue collar neighborhood of hard working Philadelphians . The building still stands. But the neighborhood is doomed. #kensingtonphilly #cambriaboxing #kensingtonandsomerset #boxing
One of my rarest posters is of Jack Dillon versus Larry English. Jack Dillon aka Jack the giant killer was from Frankfurt Indiana and if 5 foot seven fought most of his battles against larger men. He was considered a ferocious fighter in almost 247 fights he prevailed in quite a few he ended up in asylum in Chattahoochee Florida, were he died and was buried in an unmarked grave in 1942. There has been some mention of my thoughts on the Sam Langford versus Ketchell fight anyone that follows the sport knows that in those days they were newspaper decisions. The majority of decisions was who won the fight, but there were also newspaper men that disagreed with each other of who won the fight, as they do today I have thousands and thousands of newspaper clippings on boxing going back to 1900 and further and if these people, the so-called experts today if they knew what they were talking about, you would read all these ringside newspaper reports again like today people disagreed on decisions some people thought Ketchell won some people thought Langford won so do you research and you will come to the same conclusion that everyone has a different opinion. On Joe Borrell I made a mistake. He fought Harry Greb four times. I have a two hour taped interview with Joe Burrell, who was a dear friend of mine and he told me he had dropped Harry Greb in one of the fights as he said I had him down! so he fought him four times not two times OK kill me ! But as far as newspaper decisions, again it was the majority of the decisions from the newspaper scribes a lot of the fight game was crooked then as of today and a lot of scribes were on the take. but they were still disputes. For instance people believed Henry Armstrong beat Ceferino Garcia, which would’ve made him middleweight, champ and four-time titleholder in the era of eight weight divisions. Also, Mickey Walker against Jack Sharkey, who most believed Walker won the decision.
This the only poster I’ve ever seen of bantamweight champion Johnny Coulon out of Chicago originally from Canada. He was a great fighter. He lived a long life , this is a very, very rare poster if you read up on him he was a very interesting man later in life he had a trick where nobody could lift him off the ground and nobody could do it , it was an amazing trick he was famous for at 118 pounds . This is another piece of boxing memorabilia from the beginning of the 20th century from the Frank Stallone museum
Not to forget great the young handsome Jewish bantamweight Abe Goldstein, born in the slums of New Yorks lower east side 1898 an raised in an orphanage he grew up the hard way . Abe is considered fifth greatest bantam weight of all time. He had 136 fights including newspaper decisions ,Goldstein fought some of the greatest banty’s of that time. Abe lost his title to Eddie ‘Cannonbal’ Martin. Like most boxers Goldstein lost all his savings in the crash of 29 and ended up driving a cab. He lived to the ripe age of 78.
