The deep sea is our largest ecosystem, carbon sink, and climate stabilizer. We cannot cope with the impacts of the #climate and #biodiversity crisis if we don’t have a healthy and functioning ocean.
Thanks to our global and collaborative efforts on all continents, a growing number of countries (24 now!) chose to listen to scientists and join the moratorium to stop deep-sea mining. 🚫🌊⛏️
And on the other side, there is… Norway. 🇳🇴
The Norwegian government announced that they wanted to open their doors to deep-sea mining in the fragile and pristine Arctic Ocean—a critically important ecosystem for the regulation and the stability of our global climate.
This decision goes against ALL scientific recommendations. Even the Norwegian Environmental Agency, a government scientific body, stated that this decision lacks any scientific and legal basis. 👀
On January 9th, the Norwegian Parliament will vote to either allow or refuse deep-sea mining in the Norwegian continental shelf.
And the consequences of this vote will spread far beyond Norwegian borders… It will determine the future of the Arctic, and essentially, the future of our planet and humanity. 🌎
