This was the most serious line I rode last year. After I rode it with @goodmannnnnn I called @highcamp.us who first rode it over 20 years ago.
“That’s a spicy line” I said.
He gave his usual laugh, agreed and added “I brought an inclinometer with me. The top measured in the mid 50’s.”
I have no idea about slope angles but those first turns still make my palms sweat.
The snow is far from glory powder but pretty close to optimal for a line like this.
Deep powder would have been a mega wallow climbing, the sluff would be a nightmare and a small avi would be really serious.
It’s also an example of how important it is to put in time riding firm, variable steeps at the resort so you are ready when the stakes are higher.
Volume recommended.

Welcome to Paliwood.
Where the airs are many and the kids are sendy.
The old men slash and talk of years gone past.
Fresh carcass is a treat, but father time can’t be beat.
Fix your injuries, watch what you eat, and riding will remain sweet.

1 hour up, 1 minute down. However that one minute holds a lot more space in my memory than the the one hour.

Art of Shralpinism just won a National Outdoor Book Award. I have won some awards over the years but the #noba is the most surprising to me.
Big thanks to @mtnbooks and @chris.crossen for the help creating the book.
We are offering a #artofshrapinism signed book and @yeti mantra water bottle. Details below.

🔺Avy Savvy Quick tip🔺
I like to keep the 5 Red Flags on the front of my brain which is why I put them on the sleeve of all the @jonessnowboards jackets.
🚩 New snow
🚩 wind
🚩 whomping or cracking
🚩 heat
🚩 sign of recent avi activity
Bonus, 6th 🚩; secondary exposure, aka “dirty terrain”
Disclaimer: if your are dealing with “deep slab instability” the avalanche danger can be very dangerous even if there are no red flags.

This is one of the most important and least practiced skills in successfully rescuing someone who has been buried in an avalanche.
It’s also the hardest and least fun to practice. It is very humbling how long it takes to get to an airway of someone a meter or two down.

Sierra Crest Surf Club December report.
Knee high and firing…

🏄♂️ @nick_russelll @jerryjmark
All of it, I miss all of it. As I wait for winter to show up to the Sierra my dormant winter senses occasionally get stirred.
It goes without saying floating down fields of powder would be nice right now.
Less obvious are the skin track conversations and mountain top meditations.
The wait is nothing new. November has always been a maybe month. One in which I seem to look at the surf forecast more than the snow forecast.
For now, the occasional dance down the white ribbon of death will do.

Thirty five minutes of extreme tech talk bliss with tech master and turn mentor @mark_fawcett.
We talk, breaking in boots, camber, side cut, entry points, stance angles, outerwear and more.
I hopped in Fawcett’s car when I was 14 to hit the New England contest circuit. At 16 I followed him to the pro tour. I learned so much from him on and off the mountain that I can say I would not have life I have now without him.
It’s been over 10 years since I have seen him but our tech talk did not miss a beat.

Great pro tip from master shralpinist @joeyvosburgh.

“Snow observations come in various forms—skier traffic and avalanche activity, surface conditions, profiles, tests, whumphs, cracking, ski penetration compared to foot penetration, temperatures and more. One crucial point is never to base a decision on a slope solely on one observation. It’s the collaboration of many observations that aids in decision-making. Here’s a quick demonstration of pole probing. It’s by no means perfect, but it’s a quick and practical observation to add to the data you should be gathering. Pole probing can help track the depth of a crust as wind loading changes across the landscape and highlight the location or depth of a less resistant layer. Using a pole with a streamlined grip or end cap aids in pushing it through and noticing inconsistencies. Yeah, I’m biased, but our Split Sticks are just that!” @joeyvosburgh

When I got the first prototype I thought, “you have gone to far.” Once I tried it my mind quickly changed. I became so hooked on the edge hold and snap it ended up being the board I rode the most last year.
What surprised me most was it’s versatility in a variety of conditions and terrain.

🚨Introducing🚨
The Freecarver Series.
Blending design elements from race, boardercross, and freeride boards, the new Freecarver 6000s and Freecarver 9000s are hyper-fast carving machines made for trenching the deepest turns of your life.
What makes the Freecarver models so unique is that they feature a tip-to-tail full camber profile matched with a tapered directional shape and a 3D Contour Base. The full camber profile creates a long effective edge for maximum turn power, and the tapered shape + 3D Contour Base allows you to effortlessly roll onto your edge.
The only difference between the shapes of the Freecarver 6000s and the Freecarver 9000s is sidecut length. The Freecarver 6000s has a six-meter sidecut which is ideal for snapping short turns and carving around trees. The Freecarver 9000s has a nine-meter sidecut which is perfect for ripping monster turns and opening it up in big terrain.
The Freecarver series was an instant hit with the entire team and has become a staple in the quiver.
Explore the Freecarver Series now available in-store and on the Jones site.
