Might be long. When I was a scrawny, freshman clarinetist at Juilliard, there was this tall, loner, senior drama student who would stride through the halls singing and mumbling to himself. We were 2 of the few minority black students in the whole school, but he never made eye contact with me, which was fine because I thought he was weird and scary. One day 2 clarinet buddies and I couldn’t find a practice room to practice in, so we found an empty drama studio to use. We put our clarinets together and just as we were about to start playing, the scary mumbler burst into the room mumbling to himself. We stared in shocked silence as he began moving chairs around, not even acknowledging we were there. I finally mustered up the courage to say, “Um…we’re practicing.”, to which he spun around, made eye contact for the first time and bellowed, “THEN GO FIND A PRACTICE ROOM!”, then went back to his chore. Imagine 3 frightened clarinetist quickly unscrewing their horns and hurrying the hell out of there!!! 😂😂😂 Years later, working on a show together, he recalled seeing me in the halls with my clarinet case. He did not recall that story, but we shared a chuckle and he said, “That sounds like me during that time.” In my freshman year, I saw all of the drama performances. He inspired me in every one of them. Especially his “Othello”. Brother Andre! I cannot believe this news! I’m numb brother. Thank you for your ART and soul! 💔💔💔
