Michael on why it took two and a half years to create his ‘Bad’ album:
“A perfectionist has to take his time; he shapes, and he molds, and he sculpts that thing until it’s perfect. He can’t let it go before he’s satisfied, he can’t. If it’s not right, you throw it away and do it over. You work that thing till it’s just right. When it’s as perfect as you can make it, you put it out there.”
Michael’s song “This Is It” premiered this week in 2009. It gave him his 36th Grammy nomination, for the 2011 Grammy’s Best Male Pop Vocal Performance category. MTV remarked on Michael’s work saying it carries “breathless, effortless phrasing, the lean-yet-heavy falsetto, the hint of gravel (and gravitas), the soaring choruses.” Hit the link in stories now to hear “This Is It.”

Michael’s “Billie Jean”, “Beat It”, “Thriller”, “Bad” and many more. Don’t call them “music videos” – Michael explains why he calls them “short films”: “On the set I explained that we were doing a film, and that was how I approached it. I wanted the most talented people in the business, the best cinematographer, the best lighting people we could get. We weren’t shooting on videotape; it was 35-mm film. We were serious.”
Michael explained the design process for his performance clothes. He told the Washington Post in 1984: “I just I tell them what I want, and they make it. Sometimes I sketch them. I love to design. Late last night I was up until 4 in the morning. I had an idea and sketched it and sent it Federal Express to Los Angeles. It was a shirt with ruffles.”

The blog “Mastering The Mix” believes it was Michael’s focus that made his vocal recordings shine: “He never had the lyrics in from of him when he was recording. He’d always make sure that he knew every word and was confident in how he was going to sing every utterance. There was no wasted energy in reading or trying to remember a melody.”

“Maybe the biggest legacy Michael Jackson will leave us with will be how he brought us together. America has a long history of segregation, first legally and then de facto. It was just our reality that people didn’t often cross the racial boundaries that existed. But people who would have never found a reason to interact shared a love for Michael Jackson.” – New Jersey Edgewater Press #MJHumanitarian
DeviantArt user LordDavid04 created his vision for an unofficial Michael Jackson edition Monopoly game perhaps inspired, in part by, how Michael described his early career a little like the game: “I had always been a Monopoly fan at home … the “chitlin’ circuit” of theaters where we played and won contests was kind of like a Monopoly board full of possibilities and pitfalls. After all the stops along the way, we finally landed at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, which was definitely Park Place for young performers like us. Now we were on our way up Boardwalk, heading for Motown. Would we win the game or slide past Go with a long board separating us from our goal for another round?”
RIP Rudolph Isley, founding member of The Isley Brothers. Starting in the late 1950s, Rudolph and his brothers were among music’s most influential artists, earning both a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and induction into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their harmonies blended seamlessly on such joyful hits as “Shout,” “Twist and Shout,” “It’s Your Thing” and This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You) as well as the socially conscious “Fight the Power.” Rudolph Isley will be missed.
