Farewell, old soldier. That’s goodnight and goodbye to our beloved Bernard. Wilf is mentioned in dispatches next week, all safe and sound, don’t worry, but that’s the only scene Bernard was able to film. We had a wonderful time! We’d never lost touch, in all these years, so I phoned him up and asked him to come back. He sniffed and said, ‘Let me see the script.’😂 We had a wonderful readthrough with 120 people at which he was adored by one and all. A lovely dinner in Cardiff where he regaled us with tales galore, twinkling as ever. Then the shoot in Camden – you can see in Unleashed and read in next week’s DWM how much he enjoyed that. And then… we had a little more written, but it wasn’t to be; at 93 years old, the old soldier had given us his best, and stepped away. Night, Bernard, and thank you. I love you.♥️

MISSING LINES. Okay, so I know the Doctor has been to the edge of the universe before, and further. The First Doctor went to Quinnis “in the fourth universe.” The Fourth Doctor went to the Planet of Evil! And the 13th was on board Tecteun’s ship in-between universes. So, this is the scene with the Doctor & Donna looking out at the nothingness, Draft 3, 17.04.22, where I acknowledged that. And then I cut it, because 😴 But still, the Doctor was thinking it! Brigit Forsyth (1940-2023) Brigit starred in the very first drama I ever wrote, Dark Season (1991). She played Miss Maitland, who saved the day by driving a bulldozer into a supercomputer! She had to have bulldozer lessons, which she loved. I went to the rehearsal rooms in North Acton and I was tongue-tied, she was the most famous person I’d ever met! Thelma! From The Likely Lads! And nothing like poor Thelma, of course, she was warm and funny and great with a muttered aside. I’d see her over the years, when I worked at Granada, because she was married to a fine old Coronation Street director, Brian Mills. Then, in 2021, Big Finish brought Dark Season back for a 30th anniversary. Brigit was retired, and not well by that stage, but she came back for a lap of victory, that old fire still burning. Miss Maitland saved the world, one last time. It was nice to thank her, and to say goodbye. Night darling ♥️xxx RIP

Two men meet by chance and we follow their relationship across the decades, from the heights of McCarthyism in the 50s to the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. This is devastating, gripping, hot, brilliant and absolutely wonderful. Landmark TV, written with such ferocious, unsparing intelligence. I’ve never seen, so clearly, how the closet, with all its lies, power and compromise, perfectly fits the world of politics. And such a profound understanding of sex, with joy, fear, kink, roleplay and the sheer complications of two men negotiating with each other. Let alone the complications of love! The most brilliant cast, led by @mattbomer and @jbayleaf, wonderful script by @ronnyswaner and a gorgeous score by @paulleonardmorgan, led by the mighty @danminahan. Available on @paramountplusuk. I’ve been thinking a lot about the brilliant review of this by @paul_flynn which asked the fundamental question, “What was it about us that caused such opprobrium?” Television
Sister Act! @thecentre_yganolfan Oh my God, so much fun. Starring Lesley Joseph, who’s absolutely wonderful. @philcollinson and I hooted. Nuns fighting gangsters! Brilliant cast.
