Takashi Murakami Instagram – Takashi Murakami’s newest masterwork, which also makes its premiere at #MurakamiMonsterized, is titled “Judgement Day” — an 82 feet long painting that used 10,000 different silk screens and was produced in a matter of several weeks! 😱
The main figure in the center is Enma, the King of Hell in Buddhism. But you’ll also find zombie-like kabuki actors dressed as samurai and geisha, and two groups of yokai (Japanese supernatural beings).
Akin to music sampling, Murakami was inspired by different artistic styles to create a visual feast of images. You may notice references to 19th century Japanese woodblock prints, including works by Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, and Murakami’s use of trompe-l’œil or western optical illusion techniques.
