The most extraordinary discoveries are coming out of Al-‘Ula right now! I can’t share all of them as it’s happening thick and fast. But let these images whet your appetite….

Bit late to the game, but happy #TShirtDay @BBC6Music !!! This was from the most special gig. My 21st birthday at South Park – Oxford homecoming from Radiohead, with Supergrass supporting. The heavens opened, the amps blew, & they played acoustic to finish the gig. Incredible!
There will be photos… many photos… but here’s me sharing my thoughts. This experience is simply mind-blowing!!!
Set your tele-boxes….
Adventure update! Al-‘Ula is a remarkable place! I’m blown away by how many millennia of history can be documented in this location. It was an essential hub on the incense road, linking continents & cultures through the rare fertile sites in an otherwise desert landscape.
I’m often found creeping around old churches, usually in the dark. But visiting the beautiful Collegiate Church of St Gertrude in Nivelles was a particularly eerie one for me. The lights were out, and around every corner I found the triumphant and slightly terrifying statues of Gertrude, graves, relics and skeletons. I was on the hunt for the 7th Century patron saint of cats, Gertrude, who was a total bad-ass – refusing marriage proposals, shaving her head to pass as a monk, and running her own powerhouse in Belgium. The spookiness just added to the excitement of finding her! You’ll have to wait for my next book to find out more OR book on my January Histfest course where I’ll share some discoveries… http://histfest.org/medieval-women/
