Does rewarding your dog’s anxiety make them more anxious? What do you do when your dog is scared of a storm, fireworks or the grumpy dog at the park? What about when you first come home from work? Ignoring your dog = ignoring their feelings…

Love.
Exercise is so much more than a walk around the block. Exercise is mind, body and spirit related where all three intertwine. For me, my dogs insist on safe yet novel experiences not just for their physical health but for their mental health too. Here Chester is practising his balance across my dam, as he explores the new smells of the morning. The ducks, the roos, the evening fox droppings are all letters to him about his home and who he shares it with. Try to forget about the dog park or the walk around the block but expand your routine as you expand your mind as well as your dogs mind. Visit new places, mix things up, change direction here and there and always keep your dog safe. Safety from their point of view that is, not just ours. Share where you go on adventures and give others ideas for their dog. #laurav #bestlife
Remember Roger, the beautiful red kangaroo from @thekangaroosanctuary ? Harry reminds me so much of him. We may be all different species, but we are so connected. Whether it’s our appearance, abilities, homes, shared resources… we are all part of one great earth.
Nothing this machine can’t do! The @dyson_anz is pretty great too x
When you’re told to ignore your dog when you come home, you’re not really reinforcing anything good. I always acknowledge my dogs with absolute calm adoration and within 30 seconds we all get it out of our system. It is natural and normal to be happy at your loved one’s return home. Imagine how our partners would feel if we ignored them when we got home because we didn’t want them to feel anxious when we are away. There is no evidence that ignoring your dog helps with separation anxiety. There are other ways we help with that. The only thing I’m conscious of is jumping up with Harry, so sometimes I’ll drop food on the floor to redirect him. One of the best parts of my day is coming home, and how lucky I am that my dogs feel the same way.
There is no greater love than the love I feel for you, Chester.
My name is Harry and I’m a Ball addict. Dogs with ball obsessions can really suffer mentally and physically. It is really important to regulate interactions with balls as much as needed, and find other games where your dog can expend their energy less obsessively. When a dog is after a ball, the dopamine is fired up so much so that a dog may feel anxious, overcome with energy, and unable to decompress and relax. Especially so if they can’t access the ball, or if it’s taken away. Good substitutes are, teaching your dog a new skill, target training, finding food, scent detection to name a few. Whilst it might be easy for us to throw a ball over and over, it is often not easy for our dogs to cope. Think outside the box when it comes to your dog. #dogoftheday #dogsofinstagram #dogtraining #dogoftheday

Does your dog have environmental allergies or atopic dermatitis too? This year is said to be one of the worst for those suffering with itching and scratching! Some of my clients who have suffered with unbearable allergies have originally presented with irritability and being generally lethargic… so it is always important to determine the cause of the behaviour, which is often related to physical pain and discomfort. Some ways to alleviate the allergy-suffering include: – Wiping down your dogs paws, face and ears when returning home from a walk – Avoiding known environments that leave your dog itching when they get home – keep your dogs coat groomed and clean – try supplements such as @zamipet allergy and itch chews – consult with your trusted veterinarian to discuss other appropriate management strategies and treatments.
Good or bad? Got a big question for Harry? He’ll tell you what he thinks!
