Madeline Weinstein Instagram – Two days ago hundreds of Jewish and non-Jewish NYers, led by rabbi @abbychavastein and @ifnotnoworg organizers, came together in prayer, song, ritual and chant to mourn the deaths of Israelis and Palestinians, and to urge @repdangoldman to call for ceasefire along with the continued negotiation for the safe release of hostages. 18 of us including myself were also arrested while participating in civil disobedience outside his office. Brooklyn is not with Dan Goldman on this one, and we will not stop protesting his hawkish stance and racist censuring of @rashidatlaib until he changes course or is voted out of office. While feeling so moved by Jewish activism, I also want to acknowledge the racism and Islamophobia inherent in the fact that American Jewish voices are such necessary and effective messengers rn. (Of course, there are MANY Jews who are not white, and many Palestinians who are not Muslim.)
I feel really frustrated and sad—like truly deeply saddened by the narrative that care and concern for Palestinians and (Jewish) Israelis is a zero sum game. That it is at all controversial to say you’re horrified by the bombing of hospitals and the starving of an entire population.
