Saying goodbye is getting harder. When I was a child, my grandparents would spend a few months with us in California. Whenever they were getting ready to go back to Taiwan, I would always cry saying goodbye as they loaded up the car for the airport. It wasn’t until I was in middle school that I stopped crying (I finally felt like a “big girl”). I spent most of my childhood with my grandparents, so the attachment is strong. I recently returned back from my trip to Taiwan and maybe it’s because my grandpa is getting older, but goodbyes are tough again. The feeling of biting my tongue and fighting back my tears as he hugs me goodbye, silently crying in the cab, feelings of sorrow & questioning “when will I have more time with him?” taking over as I leave has become a routine in the recent years. Coming back from my travels, instead of souvenirs, I’ve returned with some realities I’ve learned about myself. It’s crazy have much travel can reveal things you had covered up under the surface.
