He’s set to serve nine days and the rest of the sentence “will be suspended for over five years,” according to the Iranian daily Etemad and Radio Free Europe. During that time, he will effectively be prohibited from filmmaking and required to take a filmmaking course for the sake of “preserving national and ethical interests.” LEILA’S BROTHERS was banned after it “broke the rules by being entered at international film festivals without authorization,” and the director refused to “correct” it as requested by the culture ministry, official media said at the time. Giving a glimpse into Iranian society, LEILA’S BROTHERS focuses on an Iranian woman who tries to help her family as they struggle with economic hardships, the impact of international sanctions, and corruption, in Tehran. Roustayi, gained international acclaim for his film LAW OF TEHRAN (AKA JUST 6.5) which examined Iran’s drug problem and the brutal and ineffective response from police. Roustayi is one of the most recent Iranian filmmakers being censored and imprisoned by the authoritarian regime. Previously, Internationally renowned Iranian filmmaker, Jafar Panah, was banned from leaving Iran and sentenced to six years in jail. He went on a hunger strike and was ultimately released in 48 hours. We now have less than 20 DAYS to help garner enough attention to appeal his sentence. #Repost @nobelprize_org ・・・ The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize to Narges Mohammadi for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all. Her brave struggle has come with tremendous personal costs. Altogether, the regime has arrested her 13 times, convicted her five times, and sentenced her to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes. Mohammadi is still in prison. Narges Mohammadi is a woman, a human rights advocate, and a freedom fighter. In awarding her this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to honour her courageous fight for human rights, freedom, and democracy in Iran. This year’s peace prize also recognises the hundreds of thousands of people who, in the preceding year, have demonstrated against the theocratic regime’s policies of discrimination and oppression targeting women. Only by embracing equal rights for all can the world achieve the fraternity between nations that Alfred Nobel sought to promote. The award to Narges Mohammadi follows a long tradition in which the Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the peace prize to those working to advance social justice, human rights, and democracy.
