The colder corners of the world often escape our attention when considering waves to seek out and hopefully surf. Sometimes in the moment, when it’s dark, freezing, and the only thing standing between you & good waves is a wet wetsuit and a snowy parking lot, you don’t want to go through the discomfort of changing out… but without a doubt, the small sacrifice leads to greater memories, happines, and sometimes even an art form that hopefully inspires others to do the same. These memories from a surf expedition in Iceland, 2021, for @billabong were no exception… but certainly worth the effort that led us to empty lineups accompanied only by adjacent peaks and an occasional whale sighting.

Over the last week, I’ve been filming First Take: Season 2 around my old stomping grounds here in California’s Central Coast… I felt like it’s important to show places that are sometimes overlooked for visiting, especially one that played such a huge part in my career back in the days when I lived in my truck and was borrowing telephoto lenses to shoot surf. Since aerial photography is a passion of mine, I decided to share that perspective with @rachel_jones_ross and we scored one of the best sunsets I’ve seen in years, serving as a reminder of how special & idyllic this little corner of the world can be.

The forest undergoes transformation as the sun dips behind the mountains and stars replace the blue skies. Taking a moment to be quiet and allow the sounds of wildlife to resume and being disturbed by your presence really gives you a window into the vast amount of life in this particular ecosystem. Last fall, I was fortunate enough to spend an evening underneath these giants, documenting them in all conditions during an assignment for @natgeo … sometimes those type of nights camping in the truck eating freeze dried food are the best… keeping you a little more connected to the nature you’re out to document and open to immersing yourself in special place like this one.

I grew up driving this stretch of coastline in my beat up truck, inspired by the significant relief of the peaks eventually brushing with the shores of the Pacific Ocean. I shot up and down these shores well before I was a professional photographer… Up every morning at the crack of dawn hoping to get the quintessential surf photograph on a huge winter swell. I took one my best friends @ellithor on a sunset flight so he could see this part of the world from my favorite perspective… and I’m sure I’ll keep coming back here throughout my life.
Patagonia is one of those places on earth that feels somewhat untouched by time… easier to enter into communion with nature at the rugged foot of the Andes, distracted only by occasional rush of wind through the valley and the constant sound of water flowing downstream. Last fall during an assignment for @elevenexperience I had the unique pleasure of fly fishing in the Rio Palena not far from the Chile/Argentina border…a truly meditative experience that feels more like a dream than a memory.

Dancing among the clouds in a Cessna 172… a plane I’ve spent a significant amount of time in throughout my career & one of the best ways to see California’s coast. Just wrapped up an incredible week filming season 2 of “FIRST TAKE” – sharing my home with a truly special crew and highlighting a few places that are important to me. Can’t wait to release the episodes soon and share moments like from this sunset flight and the stories from each guest including
@rachel_jones_ross @jude_allen @johnlarracas @tiffpenguin @so.shauna @henrysdiary
There’s something about the full exposure & vulnerability of sitting on a bike… feeling the open air while surrounded by the fingertips of glaciers and green, mossy peaks meeting black sand. Last fall during a shoot for @ubcobikes we decided that pushing the bike in a rougher environment, true to Iceland’s nature, felt like the best way to test its capabilities over the course of a few days. Despite some black sand, boulders, & pretty wet conditions, the bikes performed well and made for a super fun way to access the terrain near the Katla Glacier.

A few years ago, I was given the unique honor of sharing the story of one of my close friends @navajomylo who grew up with a passion for making a difference in caring for his home, landscape, and the people who live in the Navajo Nation. As a kid, I spent a lot of time in the four corners area exploring the mysteries of the desert… so getting to make a film with someone who truly understands that place meant a lot to me.
