First day on shore in Antarctica- the goal of our long journey. I left on the 26th of December and it took us almost three weeks of travelling and quarantining. It was all worth it when we surveyed the first penguin colony. Seeing this pristine environment, the roughness, the penguins, the whales and birds. A few weeks ago I wouldn’t even have been able to tell you there are different species of penguins and now here we are distinguishing between Gentoo and Adelie Penguins. I have never been to such an isolated place before and yet it’s already feeling the impact of human activities. This is my first time on the Arctic Sunrise. And truthfully, there is so much that I don’t understand about the oceans but I do know that we need to protect them. That‘s what the Global Ocean Treaty tries to accomplish, create the legal framework for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). With the UN negotiations in March there is now a real chance to protect the needed 30% of our oceans by 2030 (30×30). This makes it seem like it’s a great idea to go to Antarctica for fun. It’s not. A lot of the time it is anything but fun – I felt seasick for days on end. And that is good. Because we need to restrict human impact on this breathtaking, beautiful and incredible environment, this ought not to encourage more of it. Also: I know signing a petition often feels like it doesn’t change much, but over 3.5 Million people over the world have already made their voice heard and signed the petition – suddenly there is a real possibility of change.
