BOWIE & BING: THE FULL STORY BEHIND THE UNLIKELY CHRISTMAS DUET
“Peace on Earth, can it be, Can it be…”
Having already aired in the US, the UK got the chance to see David Bowie and Bing Crosby’s Christmas duet, Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy for the first time on this day in 1977.
Five years later the RCA release of the recording peaked at #3 for Christmas and the last week of 1982.

1973 BELONGS TO DAVID BOWIE *
“A trumpet you can blow, And a lunch at Rules…” **
We close our 50h anniversary celebrations of 1973 today with a look back at New Year’s Eve, 1973.
These pictures by Michael Putland were taken at an RCA Records luncheon at the prestigious Rules restaurant in London’s Covent Garden, to mark Bowie’s extraordinary performance on the UK album charts.
The plaque in the framed album presentation was inscribed thus:
“Awarded to David Bowie for outstanding musical achievements. From your friends at RCA.“
At the New Year’s Eve presentation, David apparently rose from the head of a long table in an upstairs room to thank everyone:
“I don’t know what to say, I feel like a rock ‘n’ roll star. At least it keeps the kids on the streets. Thanks to everyone who bought or were given the albums.”
For more information about Bowie’s 1973 chart performance, see the post from 6th December titled: THANKS FOR NUMBER ONE DAVID.
FOOTNOTE: Rules, which claims to be the oldest restaurant in London, was also the venue for the festive photoshoot that put David on the cover of the December 1969 edition of Fabulous 208.
* Other years are available when it comes to Bowie’s success, for example, ten years later his chart performances weren’t too shabby either. Indeed, years ending in 3 were generally good for David Bowie.
** Apologies for the appropriation of the lyric from Kooks, which originally reads: “A trumpet you can blow, and a book of rules…”

ZIGGY STARDUST NEARLY THERE 52 YEARS AGO TODAY
“I could make it all worthwhile as a rock & roll star…”
Though David Bowie’s hair had taken a tentative step towards the Ziggy cut, as evidenced by Louanne Richards portrait from November 1971, what we’re actually marking today is the move towards the final version of The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars album.
Two days before the 17th December 1971 UK release of Hunky Dory, a tape of Ziggy Stardust was delivered. (See 2nd image)
Though still not the final tracklisting, here’s how that 15th December tape looked:
SIDE ONE
Five Years
Soul Love
Moonage Daydream
Round And Round
Port Of Amsterdam
SIDE TWO
Hang On To Yourself
Ziggy Stardust
Velvet Goldmine
Holy Holy
Rock And Roll Star
Lady Stardust
Here’s a reminder of the final album tracklisting:
SIDE ONE
Five Years
Soul Love
Moonage Daydream
Starman
It Ain’t Easy
SIDE TWO
Lady Stardust
Star
Hang On To Yourself
Ziggy Stardust
Suffragette City
Rock ’N’ Roll Suicide
FOOTNOTE: The third image here (taken in Cyprus), is of David with Zowie the nit nurse inspecting the Christmas ’71 hairdo, which had been shorn even further since November.

PRESLEY DOES BOWIE ON THE BBC…OR DOES HE?
“Elvis is English…”
Ten years ago this week (26th December 2013), listeners to the 6 Music special, This Is Radio Clash, were pleasantly surprised to hear a message from Elvis Presley imitating David Bowie…or was it the other way around?
Make up your own mind here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p01nxvg7 (Linktree in bio)
For those of you that can’t access the BBC, here’s the text of the message to be read in a pretty convincing Elvis drawl:
“Hello everybody, this is David Bowie making a telephone call from the US of A. At this time of the year, I can’t help but remember my British-ness and all the jolly British folk, so here’s to you and have yourselves a Merry little Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you very much.”
To complete the effect, one should perform the impersonation of Bowie’s take on Elvis over Johann Strauss Sr’s Radetzky March, Op. 228 on an Apple Mac so that the distinctive Mac volume control quack sound is audible on fade out.
David Bowie is pictured here with Paul Simonon of The Clash backstage at New York’s Shea Stadium when the band opened for The Who on October 12th, 1982.
The second image is Philip Castle’s rough for the Bowie/Elvis cover of the BBC Radio 1 1973 magazine, The Story Of Pop. Regular readers of this page will know well Castle’s work on Aladdin Sane.

BOWIE’S LENNON TRIBUTE 40 YEARS AGO TONIGHT
“Imagine all the people…”
David Bowie’s Serious Moonlight World Tour climaxed with a performance of John Lennon’s Imagine in Hong Kong on December 8th, 1983.
It was David’s tribute to his friend who had been shot and killed on the same day in New York in 1980.
You can watch a visibly emotional Bowie singing the song to the sell-out audience at Hong Kong Coliseum here: https://lnk.to/DB-Imagine (Linktree in bio)
Though today’s lyric is taken from aforementioned Lennon song, it could also apply to the record-breaking Bowie performance in Auckland twelve days earlier. Read all about that here: https://bit.ly/BowieDownUnder83Auckland (Linktree in bio)
