HAPPY CLERKS DAY!
30 years ago from today, CLERKS debuted at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival! That means, if you ever wanted to stop me or my career from happening, youʼd send a Terminator back to this moment in time 3 decades back.
Mercifully, there was no robotic hunter/killer trying to kill me at Sundance that year. The inaugural screening took place at the Holiday Village Cinema in a sold out 150 seater. That was the first time I got to see my first film with a full audience. The sheer thrill of finding out that ideas Iʼd had years prior actually held up to public scrutiny from strangers was intoxicating (but that also might have had something to do with the thin air at the high altitude).
That first screening started the buzz that powered the next three screenings and a deluge of press about the black and white New Jersey convenience store movie and the director who was going back to work there after the Festival ended.
By our fourth and final Sundance screening at The Egyptian Theater on Main Street in Park City, Clerks was being talked about and written about like it was well worth watching. As he introduced me and the film, Festival head Geoff Gilmore described me in a way that still gets me in the feels when he said “If Kevin Smith didnʼt exist, the Sundance Film Festival wouldʼve had to invent him.”
Mine was a Cinderella-ish or Rocky-like tale that reminded folks anyone can take a shot at their dreams and maybe find a modicum of success – even if theyʼre from New Jersey.
Do you have a dream (one that doesnʼt involve hurting people or animals, destruction or death)?
2024 is the year you move closer to your goal and take your shot on yourself.
Many thanks to Brian, Jeff, Jay, Marilyn, Lisa, Scott, Dave, Kim, Virginia, Donald, Mom, Dad, the Thapars, and everyone else who helped me craft Clerks! Many thanks to Sundance, Mark Tusk, Bob Hawk and John Pierson for guiding a gobsmacked newcomer in his sudden success. And many thanks to you, my friends, for 30 years of continued interest in the Askewniverse adventures of retailing rascals

MIDDLE-AGED MALLRATS!
@theshando and I got together in her massive Malibu mansion to talk about #Charmed, #90210, #Heathers #Mallrats and more on her LET’S BE CLEAR podcast! We both learned stuff we didn’t know in 1995 (Shannon being in the cast got us a green-light; then Mallrats killed her movie career) and we both laughed lots! From watching her show on a rabbit-eared television set on the counter in @quickstopgroceries in the early 90’s to malling Minnesota with her and @jaymewes, this is the story of how much Shannon has meant to me and my life! Hear part 1 of our discussion wherever you get your podcasts! #KevinSmith #shannondoherty #letsbeclearwithshannendoherty

Merry Christmas from 2023! #KevinSmith
Merry Christmas from 2023! #KevinSmith
2024 marks the 30th anniversary of my first film CLERKS – which means that it’s also the 30th birthday of @jayandsilentbob! American original @jaymewes and I have been standing next to each other, both professionally and personally, for three decades! So we’ll be celebrating all year long with signings at @jayandsilentbobstash, Jay & Silent Bob’s Sexy Sleepover at @smodcastlecinemas in June, and useless plastic trinkets on the JayAndSilentBob dot com website! But the biggest way #jasonmewes and I will be observing our characters’ 30th anniversary is by making a NEW JAY AND SILENT BOB MOVIE! That’s right: 2024 will see us back in the costumes and fake-hair-hat for a funny fucking flick about an escalating war in the Central Jersey legal weed business! Get ready to giggle at an #askewniverse movie in which nobody dies this time! I’m virtually finished with the first draft so expect more news about the flick (including the title) by February! In the meantime, let me just thank you – with every fiber of my being – for supporting #Clerks and #jayandsilentbob across these many years! You’ve afforded us ample opportunities to play dress up and make-pretend for a living – even after over a quarter of a century! Snootch to the Nootch! (This awesome anniversary art is by the incomparable @captain_ribman!) #KevinSmith
Happy Birthday @briancohalloran!
You are the rock upon which we built a cinematic church! Thank you for taking Dante on the journey of a lifetime and thank you for being a friend and co-creator for over three decades! It’s a hack sentiment, but it’s based on a line I wrote so fuck it: You ARE supposed to be here today! #KevinSmith

My biggest fan…
This is what Christmas at 21 Jackson Street in Highlands, NJ looked like 40 years ago, waaaay back in 1983.
My sister @virginia_in_vienna made personalized trash cans for me and my brother Donald that year, each covered with collages featuring images of our favorite movies, tv shows and things. I still have mine, though the collage has slipped from its Elmer’s Glue prison and exists apart from the plastic trash can.
The tree was artificial and sat in a rotating base that my Mom bought at a Bradlee’s after-Christmas sale in 1978. We had no fireplace so stockings were hung on the wall.
Note how happy 13 year old movie nerd Kev is to receive a Return of the Jedi score album.

I am low key.

On JANUARY 25th, the REVOLUTION begins!
@netflix and @mattel bring you the next chapter in the @masters of the Universe epic, in which He-Man and Skeletor hope to hinder the horrible Hordak from conquering Castle Grayskull! The crazy-talented kids at @powerhousecreative have handcrafted explosive battles while animating an all star cast *playing* an all star cast! And for the first time, Luke Skywalker will join forces with Captain Kirk when @markhamill and @williamshatner get to act with one another! Get ready for the return of Granamyr, an Orko/Gwildor team up, and so much more when MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE: REVOLUTION drops all 5 episodes 2 WEEKS FROM TODAY!
NOTE: I raised the point twice that including “From Kevin Smith” would likely hurt the series’ chances more than it would help, but the misguided kids at #netflix kept it in. For the record: the series is from me and *lots* of other (way more) talented folks who bring much more to the show than I ever could.
NOTE 2: This trailer opens with a Sir/Saint Thomas More quote. #KevinSmith #mastersoftheuniverse #mastersoftheuniverserevelation #mastersoftheuniverserevolution #mattel
TODAY! We debut the @masters of the Universe REVOLUTION poster for season 2 of the @netflix series, with amazing art by the incomparable @natebaertsch!
And TOMORROW! Come back to see the final trailer, with new-for-this-season Granamyr! Gwildor! And HORDAK!

HAPPY NEW YEAR, KIDS!
Welcome to 2024 – the puppy 2023!
And like a puppy, may your year be filled with joy and discovery! Just remember that life is *never* mess-free.
So even the best of puppies will give you a little shit from time to time. Try not to step in it.
