I think anyone who had Irish ancestry that grew up in England had an affinity with the sound mix of punk and Irish tradition that the Pogues sprung on an unsuspecting world
My Mum’s side are Irish Cassidy and growing up in west London surrounded by Irish families and then later in Tunbridge Wells where Shane himself grew up – I know that surprises most people – I felt it too
He certainly unapologetically trod his own path, was a proper bohemian poet at heart and left some great songs for us to continue to enjoy
Certainly part of my teen experience and a lifelong reminder of that side of my family ancestry
