There’s been a lot of heartfelt reflection lately about the TV show FRIENDS, especially following Matthew Perry’s passing. It’s caused me to recall my own experience there. (Matthew had come back on the show after focusing on recovery and things were a little tentative on set. In my brief interaction with him, he was quite kind.) I have a number of positive memories from that time that I’ll share at some point. But the reflection on it has made me even more grateful for getting to take part throughout the journey in some memorable pieces of our pop cultural fabric. Working on FRIENDS was definitely one of those. Lisa, needless to say, was awesome.
(And, yes, I too still question their choice of going with the soul patch. Their idea was to make Jason more “earthy” in the opening scene as a way to sharpen the contrast for the reveal in his apartment. What’s your take on it?)

Well, for the top nine posts in 2023, Queer as Folk, Friends, Fire Island, the March on Washington, and beach fitness throwbacks led the pack with a dose of birthday fun thrown in for good measure.
Fitness was definitely a renewed personal focus in 2023 and will continue, though with new motivators as what’s important in life keeps evolving over time. As we grow, if we’re doing our part to foster it, our “why” thankfully changes.
Wishing us all our very best year yet in 2024!

I was shooting some episodes just as the Writers’ Strike started, so I didn’t share about it then. (More on that later but had a wonderful time as always.) Meanwhile, as we actors are reviewing and discussing ratification of the latest contract proposal, I wanted to share some gratitude for this craft.
I joined the Screen Actors Guild in 1984 when I did my second national commercial as a kid. The first commercial was in 5th grade. (I’ll elaborate on that another day as well, but I remember my great-grandmother, a former Broadway actress and early member of Actors Equity, being thrilled that I’d joined the thespian ranks!) I’ve been a proud SAG (now SAG-AFTRA) member ever since. And, to this day, I get a little giddy when stepping into my dressing room/trailer before heading to hair and make up and ultimately the set. Getting to do something I love is a gift I don’t take for granted.
What makes you happy? How can you express something you love or enjoy in your life, no matter the size of the expression or whether you’re paid for it or not? It can be a hobby. It can be (almost) anything. But, whatever it is, what action can you take toward it today? Pursuing things we love or enjoy is a key part of living our best, most fully expressed lives. How can you do more of that today?

Always glad when it’s Santa time again. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Tampa to wherever you are. #TampaSanta #FloridaChristmas #MerryChristmas Tampa, Florida
Christmas Eve Eve dinner at my aunt and uncle’s cabin. The horses, lake, and Spanish moss hanging from the oaks and blowing in the breeze make for a special kind of peace. Very grateful for family. Wishing you a peaceful Christmas and holiday wherever you are. #FloridaCountryChristmas

Because of the strike, we haven’t had much chance lately to be out and about promoting and supporting projects. That will change soon enough once we all settle on a fair deal. Fortunately, we have been able to do that though for films like this one, which were made under our SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement. And it was nice to have cause to throw on a suit. 😉
I’m also grateful to have gotten to celebrate my friend Mark’s first film in the theaters as a director. It’s been powerful to watch his journey and to witness his vision coming to life. Each breakthrough is special in its own way. Having your first film in theaters is definitely one of those. Congrats again, @markgantt, for this huge accomplishment! Many more to come!

There really are so many things to be thankful for, great and small. Among them, I’m especially thankful for the connections with others we get to have in life, whether with friends, family, clients, work associates, or any of the countless, subtler forms of connection we experience every day. And definitely for everyone I get to connect with in this community. Thanks to all of you for that. At the end of the day, it’s what matters. Sending you love this weekend. With a whole lot of gratitude.

When I was watching the Emmys, I saw the sweet face of @thelesliejordan appear in the In Memoriam section of the show, and it made me want to express appreciation for the truly lovely man he was. I first met Leslie on the set of Caroline in the City over on the CBS Radford lot in 1998. I was playing Caroline’s boyfriend Trevor in the show’s third season, and he had joined for two episodes in a very funny (no surprise) turn as a marriage counselor who turns out not to be one at all! Which explained his highly unconventional style of counseling as demonstrated in the shots above. I’m sure it was a total coincidence that mine were the first hands he tied up before ultimately doing that to all of us.
In the years that followed, I would run into Leslie occasionally (usually in one of the innumerable Starbucks around the city while dashing cross town between auditions) and have a lively chat about things. We had exchanged numbers and, every time we saw each other, said we needed to get together and do a proper catch up, which sadly never happened. That said, because we were both sober fellows, we did continue to see each other, connect, and chat often at the Starbucks near our West Hollywood weekend AA meetings, right up until the time he passed. He was always a genuine breath of fresh air.
When Leslie was no longer with us, one of the things that struck me, besides the loss at his passing, was the realization that he had become sort of this irregular constant (I know those concepts seem to be in opposition, but somehow they feel appropriate) in my LA experience over the decades. I think I took it for granted that he would continue to be.
That’s one of the things about the people we know and see and exchange kindnesses with. There can be this illogical idea that they’ll always be there, no matter how often we’re cautioned to the contrary. It takes having them go away to recognize the preciousness of that simple, occasional interaction. With the added years, I’m thankful that the challenge of watching people and things depart is a part of life I’m gradually accepting more. Much love to you, Leslie. If there is a “somewhere,” I know you’ve got them howling. CBS Radford Studios

At the beginning of the year, there is, of course, considerable focus on how to go about making use of this time — for example, by setting a trajectory for the year and such. And it can be very valuable to do that.
It’s also important to stay relatively detached from the outcome of the visions we’ve set. Meaning, once we’ve identified something to go for and are going for it in the way we choose to, then whatever shows up and what it ends up looking like specifically is okay, at least in the big scheme of things. We take the actions and surrender the results, knowing we’ll have the opportunity to course correct as we go by taking stock of the results and responding accordingly.
It’s key, though, especially for us LGBTQ folks, to keep resisting the idea that the stuff outside of us, or the circumstances we’re in, are the determiners of our value. Much love to you all for this year ahead!

As I mentioned here — considering what we’ve walked through, and continue to — we LGBTQ folk really are all warriors, survivors, and thrivers. Kudos to all of us as we keep showing up, to whatever extent and in whatever way we can and do, often very powerfully, in life. Man, I love us. Have an amazing week ahead!
