In memory of Kishin Shinoyama sensei:
Mr. Kishin Shinoyama was a photographer who crafted the image of Japan, dashing through the country’s cultural genesis that occurred during its high growth period through the era of the so-called bubble economy.
I have had the privilege of being photographed by him several times, and he kindly contributed his work in an exhibition I have curated.
We shall see how much of Mr. Shinoyama’s vast accomplishments will be historicized in the world of Japanese art. Sensei, please enjoy observing the development from where you are in the world beyond!
He was a tremendous commercial photographer who cut through the ages in Japan.
I put my hands together in prayer. 🙏

Only 25 more days left of my solo exhibition “Takashi Murakami: Unfamiliar People – Swelling of Monsterized Human Ego” at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. @asianartmuseum
On February 8, they will be holding the third and final campaign to gift the highly popular Collectible Trading Card with the admissions ticket. (Completed sets of these are being traded at high prices on the Japanese resale site Mercari.)
The painting shown in this post is titled “Judgement Day”. In my conversations with the curator Laura Allen, she asked me to create a large iconic work suitable for the exhibition’s theme, monsters. I am quite proud of this resulting work, which I created by mixing the monstrosity of human beings I felt through the pandemic with the strange imageries of Ukiyoe from the Edo period (1603 – 1868).
Ukiyoe was a theme that I had always avoided in the past, so I am very grateful that Laura’s guidance allowed me to create a work addressing it for the first time.
Please come and see my new endeavor in the few remaining days of the exhibition.

The SFAAM “Murakami: Monsterized” exhibition is until February 12th.

Please do not worry guys.
Two years ago, some hospital some doctor administered a test and diagnosed me as suffering from depression. But that test is strange. 🥲🧐
We talked about that for about 6 minutes. 日本

When it’s cold, I feel depressed.

If you’ve walked through our collection galleries before, you may notice a very familiar Ming dynasty Chinese porcelain jar in #MurakamiMonsterized.
On view for the first time, this is one of several new works Murakami created for this exhibition. Murakami’s love of ceramics led him to start translating their designs into paintings, beginning with his monumental blue and white Qinghua series which are also part of this exhibition. Inspired to make a painting of our lidded jar, exhibition curator Laura Allen brought photos of the artwork to his studio in 2019.
🏛️ See this new painting by Murakami then head to the second floor galleries to see the original lidded jar that inspired him. But be sure to visit soon! The last day to see “Murakami: Monsterized” is Feb. 12.

Thank you!
I have only one post so far but already over 10,000 people have kindly subscribed.
I’m so grateful. Thank you so much.
The company who made the inaugural video and and have advised me on the launch of my channel is @kai_you_ed KAIYOU, an online media company. I’m much obliged.
Eventually, we hope to make our own videos at Kaikai Kiki and post them regularly. We are looking for people who can help us with this project.
By the way, KAIYOU will be coming to film us tomorrow as well.
As we get older, we increasingly tend to cling to our childhood memories. In my 50s, I used to think I mustn’t wax nostalgic, but these days, I can’t keep my spirit up without revisiting those past memories. Being doused in the reality of aging, I have been puzzled by the changes happening in my brain for the past six months or so.
