Give people the benefit of the doubt.
As a leader, so much of my job is encompassed by having to make snap decisions, and assume intentions – and whilst honing this skill can be a positive thing, it can also be a catalyst for cynicism.
This year, there have been a few experiences, both personal and professional, that have reinforced to me the value of empathy and compassion.
Recognising that situations are often far more complex than they seem has been eye-opening. Giving people the benefit of the doubt not only allows for time to reach a broader understanding, but also instils a sense of trust and openness, giving people the space they need for personal and professional growth.
Of course, there is a time and a place for this – I’m not suggesting that you turn a blind eye to anything, or start acting as a doormat.
But a little compassion can go a very long way.
