The week up to Christmas Eve with the family in Zimbabwe. Houseboat, wildlife, good talks, good food, family, friends, games, love, lots of laughing, right into Christmas Eve. The day is young, this may be the second greatest week of our lives… Merry Merry Christmas from our family to YOURS!
On World Water Day, we are proud to share the progress from the Nyamakate clinic upgrades in Hurungwe, one of the areas many Akashinga rangers call home.
Thanks to the recent drilling and installation of solar boreholes at the clinic, the patients, nearby schools and villages have access to clean running water.
This is a collaborative project between the local community, Hurungwe Rural District Council, @MoveMe.studio Abundant Village and #Akashinga with support from the Australian Government (@dfat)
Water contamination and lack of sanitation are major contributors to the global prevalence of many illnesses. Communities without access to clean water pay a huge price, but it’s projects like this that allow for a better quality of life.

“Through its innovative approach to community-based conservation, Akashinga continues its efforts to protect, connect, and restore landscapes across Southern and East Africa. To date, Akashinga and its Wildlife Crime Unit have carried out 1303 arrests in 724 operations. In the last year alone, the unit has recovered 24 pangolins, 118 elephant tusks and 1 rhino horn, as well as over 1500 kg of illegally caught fish.
Hand-in-hand with its conservation achievements, Akashinga continues to prioritise community development, focusing on areas such as education, health and nutrition, infrastructure development and employment. Most recently, a joint project between Hurungwe Rural District Council, MoveMe Abundant Village and Akashinga with support from the Australian Government provided essential access to clean water through the installation of solar boreholes at Nyamakate centre and Kilo village in Chundu. Solar power has also been provided to Nyamakate Clinic, and upgrades to Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in nearby Golf and Jinami villages are in progress.”
