Thank you @our_aftermath_ for inviting me to sit down in conversation with Jansen Young and Garnell Whitfield. Jansen and Garnell, I’m in awe of your strength and ability to keep sharing your stories and remind us all that the pain for survivors of a mass shooting, and of the families who’ve lost loved ones to a mass shooting, doesn’t just move on when the news cycle moves on. Countless lives are changed forever. Thank you @kittybrandtner for welcoming me into the world of lobbying and for setting the space for discussion that welcomes facts, statistics, bipartisanship, and vulnerability. To the my fellow TN mommas ♥️ ( @melissajoanhart @marykjoyce @mbalexander ) your voices are powerful. Your stories are powerful. Your hearts are beautiful. My “why?” is simple. Hi. My name is Candice King. I live in Nashville Tn. I’m a mother who’s terrified for my children’s lives. I’m scared of that pit feeling I get on random days when I drop my kids off at their schools. I’m worried about what these active shooter drills are doing to the mental health of our kids. I’m terrified every time I see another headline about another school shooting. Another mass shooting. More lives lost. More lives changed forever. More days spent wondering, “At this rate, is it just a matter of time?”
I’m angry. So angry. Angry at the inaction of our elected officials. Prioritizing a political party over an epidemic. An epidemic that has become the #1 killer of our children in the United States of America.
