If there’s a barrier, you go around it, over it, or through it — but you don’t let it stop you. I learned that in circumstances of segregated Birmingham and I’m grateful because I took those lessons into life with me. Thank you @davidnovak for having me on your podcast this week.
Each #MothersDay, I am reminded of the love and strength of my mother, Angelena, and the parents I was blessed to have. My mother, a teacher, believed that education and the arts could provide opportunity. Here, the two of us pose for the cameras after one of her student-led performances which she organized wherever she taught, believing that they could make a difference for kids and bringing our community together. Though I miss my parents every day, often it has been their presence, not their absence, that I’ve experienced and I am forever grateful for them.
It’s always great to be back at Pebble Beach. Congratulations to my partner this week and fellow Stanford Cardinal @bwu97 on finishing 2nd, and to tournament champion Justin Rose and team champions @benw_silverman on IG and @aaronrodgers12.
The @hooverinstitution convened in Washington this past week for discussions on some of our nation’s challenges and opportunities. As this year comes to a close, I wanted to share some of my favorites from 2022 and a few predictions for 2023. I look forward with optimism to next year, and may you spend time with your loved ones and have a happy and healthy rest of the holiday season.

This week marks one year since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and one year of Ukrainians’ brave fight for their country. I had the honor of meeting with Ambassador @markarovaoksana. She is a strong voice for her fellow citizens on the front lines defending democracy. They are fighting for the values that all of us espouse – freedom, liberty and the ability to live in a place of opportunity not oppression. The Ukrainian people will win, and we stand by them.
When President @georgewbush announced PEPFAR in 2003, less than 50,000 people living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa had access to antiretroviral therapy. Today, PEPFAR has saved an estimated 25 million lives and operates in more than 50 countries. It was an honor to join President Bush, President @jakayakikwete, and many others today in Washington to commemorate 20 years and discuss the impact it’s made in global health and development. The program stands as a shining example of humanity coming together to do good and the progress that can result when America focuses its strengths toward a common cause. 🇺🇸 Photo: Grant Miller / George W. It’s the end of an era for @stanfordfball as David Shaw announced his final season with us. Once a player himself whose father also coached here, he is Stanford through and through. His record and accomplishments will stand the test of time, and the legacy he leaves will live on through the many lives he touched. A man of tremendous integrity and dignity, football was the vehicle he used to teach generations of young men what really matters — both on and off the field. We will find a coach with integrity in these challenging times for intercollegiate sports, but we will never find a replacement. Best wishes to David and Kori on this next chapter of life. You left nothing on the field.
This weekend we honored our nation’s service members, Veterans, and their families in Denver. Thank you for your service and sacrifice, which stands as a shining light for all of us and sustains our freedom and democracy. #SalutetoService
It was great to be joined by @repjuanciscomani this week at the @hooverinstitution meetings in Arizona for a discussion on principles and policies that enable the American dream. We appreciated hearing his vision for advancing sound policy in Congress.
It was great to have @chrissununu and @govwesmoore at Stanford this week for the launch of Hoover’s new Center for Revitalizing American Institutions. We appreciated the bipartisan conversation around restoring trust in our institutions in today’s polarized environment. Watch the full event at the link in bio.
As we head into the new year, I thought I’d share a few of my favorites and memories from 2023 and a few fun predictions. Wishing you a joyous 2024.

Uncommon Knowledge recorded a special episode featuring Secretary @condoleezzarice in her hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, marking the 60th anniversary of the bombings at the 16th Street Baptist Church. As a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, here’s an excerpt from the upcoming episode, set to be released in February. Host Peter Robinson and Secretary Rice are on location next to Dr. King’s statue just steps away from the 16th Street Baptist Church, discussing Dr. King’s legacy and the struggle for civil rights in America
