Emerald Gordon Wulf Instagram – If we didn’t have video evidence, you might think the cover of our Body Issue is a product of photoshop. But @EmeraldGordonWulf—local teenager, contortionist, scary movie stunt double, and human bendy straw–is really just hanging out like that, communing with the koi. If our own bodies were for some reason suddenly contorted into that shape, we would die: burst open like a potato chip bag. For Emerald, it’s just another Tuesday.

Executive Editor @ohnomateo met Emerald and her family serendipitously on Halloween. When her mom mentioned Emerald is a big deal on TikTok, he thought little of it, until she showed him a vid of Emerald arched fully backward, dancing. Then it clicked that she was a natural cover star for this issue, which celebrates our couriers of consciousness and examining how best to look after them. Turns out some of the poses Emerald can do, only a few people in the world are capable of.

We asked Emerald and her parents to join us at the historic @thegoldendoor in San Marcos–where a recent renovation has the property looking extra polished–to show off her wildest work. You can see more in our spa guide in the print issue—our annual rolodex of relaxation–or get to know Emerald in Lili Kim’s story on sdmag.com (link in bio).

We designed this Body Issue to stimulate both head and heart. Managing Digital Editor Nicolle Monico traveled to Utah to push her body to new heights. Managing Editor Jackie Bryant explored healing with Japanese bondage after the birth of her son. Associate Editor Amelia Rodriguez meditates on time-traveling bronze hands and other body-inspired pieces at an MCASD exhibition. And a handful of local writers considered their bodies in personal essays, touching on size, aging, race, gender, even body hair–a look into how others are navigating the world in the bodies they call home. So whether you’re running a bath or running on the treadmill, we hope you enjoy.
