⚠️ Don’t do it ⚠️ Don’t let those negative thoughts start creeping in. It can be so hard when auditioning for a “dream role” to not let that anxious energy build up, as you yearn to land the part. Feelings of not good enough quickly creep in. And like acid, this toxic mindset can melt away our core. 😖 Since working both behind and in front of the camera I’ve learnt a couple of super valuable things: 1) Sometimes when you get a “no”- it’s literally nothing to do with you. Let me explain. As a Writer/Director, we might have a vision or vibe in our head of who this character is, that we’ve spent hours with during the production process. And that might just happen to be completely different to you. Yes you have black hair and are 25-30 and seem to fit the brief. But that doesn’t mean you’re necessarily “how we imagined”. That doesn’t mean anything you did was bad or wrong- or you’re any less of an Actor. It just means your special sauce wasn’t right for this recipe- after all, I love garlic but it doesn’t belong in my Tiramisu 😅 2) Sometimes even if you’re having a bad day and send a tape in that is a bit off- it doesn’t matter. A rusty tape is better than no tape. We all have days we aren’t on top form. We can’t be at 100% every day. I have hated some of my submissions- then shockingly still been offered the role! 😅 Why? Well personally I’ve had an idea of who I wanted for a role, and it’s been decided on multiple things- their showreel, their IG videos, their website AND the self tape. The tape is a piece of the puzzle. 🧩 So do your best (and even if you hate it) send something in anyway. TW: Baby Loss 💔 There’s no heartbeat. The dreaded words no expecting parent ever wants to hear. 10 years ago, my baby Theo died whilst growing inside me. I was only 21 years old, I already had my daughter, Summer, but for a moment, my world fell apart. Refusing to believe these devastating words, I carried Summers doll around for days, hoping, praying, crying out- that somehow the scan was wrong. 🙏🏼 But his soul never made it to our earth. 😓 Many years later, when my sister and my best friend both experienced the same tragedy in the same week- I knew that I had to give some purpose to all the pain. For us. And for everyone else out there affected themselves or through someone they know. Making this film was one of the HARDEST things I’ve ever done. Not only because filmmaking itself demands so much of us, but because the grief I felt as I wrote those words, as I dressed the nursery, as I wept uncontrollably into that same doll I had all clung onto those years back- well that grief was all too real. Making this film was also one of the BEST things I’ve ever done- because this film has started conversations, changed perspectives and touched peoples lives. And if you think we’re finished there…. That’s Movie ✨MAGIC✨ for ya! Rocking the tiger stripes representing all the baby makers out there! 🐯 🙌🏼 This was filmed just a few years after I’d had my daughter, I was in my early 20s and it was quite a surreal experience. I got to chat to Colin Firth quite a bit, he was so lovely & charming- & he paid me one of the most touching compliments I’ve ever received!! 🥹🩷 The Director was also very generous and allowed me to shadow him, watching him direct these 2 incredible movie stars! 🌟 I have quite a few stories from that job- including the moment mine and Nicole’s eyes first met- dressed in the same costume.
