Israel has killed 109 journalists since October 7, and it has systemically targeted the families of Palestinian journalists. Ahmad, the correspondent of @AlarabyTV, lost a total of 7 members of his family.” I honestly just want to scream and wail. How can the world just sit idly by and watch this without feeling anything? How can any human watch this without feeling anything? So many of you defended Israel to me in the past 97 days. So many Hawaiians. So many people of color. And I am really at a loss at how lost so many of our own people are. Did you forget that your recent ancestors survived attempted erasure and genocide? Pehea kou piko? Honestly, where is your soul? Where is your heart? Where is your aloha? I’m so disappointed in how silent Hawai’i has been as a whole. We absolutely could be doing more as an illegally occupied state under duress of the evil governance of the United States of America. We could be uniting more. Hāwane Rios Instagram - kakahiaka nō e ka lāhui o ka honua morning greetings to the nations of the world to be banned in the shadows for standing in solidarity with palesetina has been triggering for me and many others that truly and deeply care about what is happening to real innocent people in multiple places in the world right now. meta’a has done everything it can to silence the voices of solidarity that are coming from every corner of the earth and yet, we persist, no matter how many threats of cancelation, violence, and even death that come the unhealed folks on this platform, we persist because it is simply the right thing to do. in these past 90 something days, i have lost real friends in my very life for doing what i know in my soul is right. i have seen my own community, my people, defend israhell so staunchly that my heart feels like there is nothing left to break or shatter. watching the world debate these crimes against humanity has broken something in me, probably the part that blindly and naively believed in the goodness in our kind. i don’t like being silenced. never have. never will. as a survivor of physical, sexual, emotional, mental, and spiritual abuse, i refuse to desensitize myself to the violence deliberately happening unto real people that love their ancestral homelands like i do. i’ve felt the rage. i still do. i’ve tried to call to peoples hearts through my words and mele here. i have tried to provoke critical thinking. and it has exhausted my spirit. but yet, we continue. because life is sacred and it deserves to be defended and protected. standing with palestine has never been hard or conflicting for me. like i’ve said over and over again, when we were on the frontlines standing for our mountain, palestine came and gifted us their flag, their keffiyah, their solidarity, their prayers, their love. they stood on their land too with signs with the name of our mountain raised up high. pehea ko kākou piko? who are we, hawaiians, if we do not stand with them now? how dare we call for the world to help us and then turn our backs on the world when they desperately need our offerings of solidarity, our prayers, our love, our actions? pehea kā? Hāwane Rios Instagram - H A L E . H A U M E A Upon much pule and ceremony, I have decided to open the poetic doors of the Hale Haumea to the lehulehu, to the public. I began teaching oli during the pandemic upon the request of one of my titas that was preparing to receive uhi. From that moment until now, my heart and soul has been aligned with deepening this relationship with oli as a healer, as our first medicine. This journey to Kahiki, into the distant places within ourselves through the resonate tones of our own voices that my sister, Leina’ala, so beautifully and powerfully put words to, has revolutionized the way I approach the healing of my own pain and trauma and the way that I open to my own joy. These women have taught me so much about what it means for women to allow ourselves to hold and be held by each other and by the rituals that our ancestors passed down to us through the generations. I am honored to stand with each one of them and to learn together. They have recently completed their Rites of Passage Ceremonies and have graduated to levels of leadership within the Hale Haumea, named for our sacred goddess creatress. This is a gentle announcement of a six week long Papa Oli course that I will be offering beginning in February. I am finalizing the schedule and the curriculum and my beloved @hopoelehua is almost done our website. I am writing this here to keep the focus and hold myself accountable to this kuleana. Send my greetings to Mom, Mahmoud, Sham, Adam, and everyone.” حبيبي يا روح الروح يحمزة الله يرحمك سلّم على إمي ومحمود وشام وآدم وكلهم Her beloved brother Hamza was targeted and assassinated by Israeli air strike alongside his colleague and comrade while they were driving in a car. She witnessed it happen and went to the roof to film it unknowing that it was her brother that was murdered. Her mother, younger brother, and many family members were targeted and murdered two months ago. She is a real person. With depths of grief we would never be able to actually understand. She is 21 years old and now is the only surviving child of beloved Uncle Wael. I call him Uncle because that is the way we as Hawai’i show our respect and our reverence. I don’t know them but I pray for them like I pray for my own family. Like I pray for my own people. Follow her and amplify her voice. More than that, please pray for her heart and her and her fathers safety. Israel is targeting and attacking and murdering every journalist they possibly can. These are crimes against humanity.
