It is with many and mixed emotions that I announce I will be stepping down as Chair of @beyondblueofficial at the end of this year. I first joined Beyond Blue as a Board Director almost 9 years ago, before becoming Chair in 2017. Since its creation in 2000, Beyond Blue has been a trusted source for mental health information and support in Australia, and it’s been a true privilege to help ensure that continued. During my 7 years as Chair, the organisation has continually adapted to the changing world around it and met an ever increasing demand, particularly during the Covid pandemic which created a seismic shift in the way we lived. Beyond Blue has evolved and grown its free, 24/7 mental health supports and services, and this year we launched Strategy 2023 , which can be described in three simple words: Earlier. Easier. Together. The strategy, along with Beyond Blue’s new partnership with Lifeline, will allow the organisation to focus on prevention and earlier intervention. Supporting people before mental health issues arise or they reach crisis. It’s been a thorough pleasure to work with the wonderful and supportive team at Beyond Blue, led superbly by CEO Georgie Harman. The difficult decision to step down is made somewhat easier by knowing I am passing the baton onto a fantastic successor. From 2024, Beyond Blue’s Chair will be Sam Mostyn, a highly respected businesswoman and advocate for a multitude of issues including climate change and gender equity. I’m pleased to be remaining at Beyond Blue as a Patron.

A new podcast episode is out! My latest episode features an incredible young Australian – Elly Desmarchelier. Elly is a proud disabled woman, who uses her voice to advocate for the 1 in 5 Australians living with disability. Elly was the public face of a national campaign to defend and maintain the NDIS, taking the fight all the way to Parliament House in Canberra. I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation, and I’m sure you will too! 🎧Listen at the link in bio.
Tis the season to be reading – hopefully in the shade on a sunny day! And if you are reading, here – once again – are some of my top picks and the picks of my wonderful book loving friend Josephine. I read a lot of fiction, but in the year in which the question ‘how often do you think about the Roman empire’ became a social media thing, I’m glad I also read the non-fiction works of Tom Holland, Mary Beard, David Graeber and David Wengrow. And a special shout out to the wonderful books I discussed on A Podcast of One’s Own: Angela Saini -The Patriarchs: How Men Came to Rule. Stella Prize winner Sarah Holland-Batt – The Jaguar Roanna McClelland’s debut novel – The Comforting Weight of Water Gayle Lemmon – The Daughters of Kobani (2021).

Delivering the opening speech for the first Health Day at #COP28 was a privilege. It was inspiring to see @wellcometrust and the wider climate and health community come together to focus on the health consequences of climate change. We have much work still to do. Climate change is taking a devastating toll on our health – from the 70,000 excess deaths caused by extreme heat to the increased spread of infectious disease. The cost of inaction will be substantial. We will pay it in lives and in health impacts. Health Day concluded with a great success – over 125 countries signed the first ever COP declaration on climate and health. This declaration is just the start. Phasing out fossil fuels is an intervention we must pursue to protect public health. Global leaders must be bold. Leadership isn’t about settling for what’s possible, it’s about making possible what needs to happen. If we fail to act, we are endangering lives. Science must shape our response to this crisis. Wellcome is planning to spend £100mn this year alone on climate and health research, to inform policy, protect health and spur action. I am grateful to have been part of Health Day, and to see the global community unite to prioritise human health. We must not be complacent, and instead build on the momentum from #COP28. The world is watching – and a healthier future is within our reach.
A new podcast episode is out! I’m so thrilled to share this interview with Sam Mostyn, who is taking over from me as Chair of Beyond Blue. Sam comes to the role with a formidable resume. Her career has spanned business, sport, climate change, the arts, policy and not for profit. She is well known for being the first woman AFL Commissioner, where she spearheaded the creation of a women’s league. During our conversation we discuss mental health, the importance of truth-telling, gender equality and much more! 🎧Listen at the link in bio
“We start 2024 knowing that last year, Wellcome’s charitable spend grew to £1.7 billion. We’ve been able to provide support at scale for trials of what could be the first new TB vaccine in a century. We’ve seen our long-term commitment to discovery play a part in two incredible global child health success stories – against malaria and mitochondrial disease,” says Julia Gillard, Chair of Wellcome in our annual report. 2023 was the first year of a decade in which Wellcome plans to spend £16 billion supporting discovery research and science to solve the three key global health challenges of mental health, infectious disease and climate and health. We look ahead with great expectation at what will be achieved through the power of science. #Wellcome #WellcomeTrust

We’re so proud to announce we awarded 994 scholarships in 2023 – a Western Chances record! Reflected through the words of our Patron Hon. Julia Gillard AC, this remarkable outcome is thanks to the incredible support and generosity of our nominators, partners, supporters, and community. Without you, our work would not be possible – we thank you for believing in our young people. But with many young people in Melbourne’s west still facing significant barriers to their education, there is still more work to be done. Donate today via the link in our bio to help more deserving young people achieve their dream.
