Saw a kite in the sky the other day, it was very far away but I managed to capture it on photo. Made me think of this poem by Refaat Alareer which I only discovered after he was martyred. The expectation of a premature death at the hands of the occupying forces is so present, so is the courage, and the hope, and strength of the Palestinian spirit, this kind of spirit I’ve never before witnessed in my life. The kite also made me think of how in 2011 Palestinian children in Gaza broke the Guinness Book of World Records by flying 12,350 kites simultaneously. 🪁🪁🪁 i wonder how many of them are still alive. 2024, justice, liberation, peace, dignity for all. 🍉 “Pray that your people never need the world to save them. Pray that we heal enough to save us all.” ~Jaiya John

Have been very lucky this season to be surrounded by my loved ones, and been filled with lots of joy, strength, community. Also have much to be grateful for this year. Remembering that joy is part of resistance, that none of this is normal, and that grief and anger is a refusal to surrender what is human in us. ♥️ This is a painting by Heba Zagout. She and her children were killed in an Israeli airstrike. This is a painting she posted in December last year, Bethlehem/celebrations. In solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Palestine. 🍉

Some things that have been coming up a lot for me have been the ideas of questioning who we’ve been taught to worship-people, positions, ideologies, institutions, etc. Who do we give power to, why do we give them so much power, who takes power, who we give a free pass to, who are we not allowed to question, who do we deify, who do we close an eye to and what are the ways we are coaxed out of our knowing that’s rooted in humanity into what we are told/taught. How was it so easy to accept the narratives and so difficult recognise and to unlearn? Learning how to seek the truth speakers, those with integrity, courage, the educators, the helpers, healers, lovers, and community. “Don’t ever lose hope in humanity because it requires you to concede your own and that we can never ever do.” @lsarsour thank you for these powerful words.
