This is more of hearing sister problem #1836572, fr! So many times my hearing sister (and other hearing people) have to remind me to be quiet. To be honest, my ears donโt care. ๐ ๐ Itโs awesome not being bothered by annoying sounds.
Deaf cheer, where the rhythm is felt and the energy is contagious! Deaf cheerleaders use a combination of dance, visual cues, drum beats, and sign language to perform cheers for their school. Itโs a beautiful example of universality and creativity in a world of sports. ๐ค ๐ฆ ๐ฅ
๐ซ Hot Take Alert: Donโt say โI know sign language!โ to Deaf people on the spot. ๐ โโ๏ธ Imagine youโre enjoying a meal, catching up with friends, or shopping. Suddenly, someone approaches and starts spelling out the entire alphabet or flaunting a few signs.
Instead, engage in genuine conversation! Ask about their interests, share your own, and connect on a personal level. Itโs about showing that youโre genuinely interested in getting to know the person beyond their signing/hearing abilities.
Weโre not oblivious to the fact there are sounds around us. But weโre shocked by how much hearing people hearโฆ The way we walk, even breathe, and so on! I must admit – I feel bad that you have to hear all of this and are in a way controlled by them. ๐ ๐ ๐
Have you said, โI wish I knew sign language?โ This video is for you. You might not know this, but Deaf people get this often from strangers, friends, co-workers, partners, and even family. The sad truth is that most of them never learn sign language. Donโt be that hearing person! Start to learn sign language today with @lingvano . (PS: You wonโt regret it!) ๐ค
Whatโs pretty cool is that there are more than 300 different sign languages around the world. Instead of me telling you, here are 5 Deaf people signing in their own language – from India, Australia, Mexico, USA, and Japan (JSL). Like every language in this worldโฆsign language is definitely not universal. If all languages were all the same, it would be boring.

โ ๏ธ Loud sound! Are you ready to watch โWho can hear better?โ challenge that my Deaf family got into?!? ๐๐ฅ๐ข This challenge proves that not all Deaf people hear the exact same way or hear absolutely nothing. There are different types of hearing loss. And the most important thing – we donโt care if we can hear better or not.
(FYI: The challenge was done with all of our consent.)
Over the past two weeks, Iโve experienced ridicule, harassment, and attacks simply for expressing my pride as a Deaf person by cheering out loud for my Deaf school ๐ฉท. When people make fun of me for being Deaf, theyโre not just targeting me; theyโre mocking every single Deaf person out there.
Deaf individuals have endured discrimination for how they speak, being unfairly labeled as โdumb,โ and even compared to animals ๐. Take a moment to imagine what it would be like if you faced the same unjust treatment.
Itโs time to say, โEnough is enough.โ If you stand in solidarity with the Deaf community, please share this video to help us spread awareness and promote a world where everyone is valued. โ๏ธ
What it is like when our family goes out. Hearing people asking us if one of us is hearing or can talkโฆhoping that they donโt have to do the extra work and accommodate the Deaf. Be it gesturing, pointing, using a pen/notepad, or typing on iPhone. Itโs funny that hearing people would go such length to see if one of us is hearing. BUT they wonโt put in the work to talk to a Deaf person directly. By doing that, it excludes the Deaf person. Yes, my sister @ivymansfield is hearing and weโve agreed as a family that she is to pretend to be Deaf because 1) Itโs not her job at all to speak/interpret for us. 2) When hearing people find out sheโs hearing, hearing people automatically talk to her leaving the Deaf out. 3) We want hearing people to talk to us directly. Weโre people after all.
VD: A family of three standing in front of a plain gray wall. A bald man with a black t-shirt, a teen girl with a green tank top, and a tween girl with a light purple tank top as well as green flower-printed skirt.
Letโs change the conversation. Disability isnโt a competition. Instead of comparing which experience is โbetter,โ letโs focus on celebrating the rich diversity of the human experience. Itโs not about being blind or Deaf (in some cases, itโs both); itโs about being human and respecting one anotherโs journeys. Letโs skip the question and start to embrace all kinds of people. ๐ค โฎ๏ธ
