“Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom.” On #MLKDay, we recall Dr. King’s many lessons and recommit ourselves to the fight for freedom and equality for all.
Last weekend, my team and I had the opportunity to host a group of local and national stakeholders in the agricultural space for a roundtable discussion on St. Thomas, as well as participate in numerous farm tours. A very special thank you to: – Our Virgin Islands farmers, including Tyrone Reid of Smart Life Farms and Shelli Brin of Que Sera Farm who came and shared their input and those who hosted us for our farm tours on Saturday – UVI’s administrative staff – Hideaway at Hull Bay – dinner was incredible! Thank you! At the roundtable, we had an engaging discussion around the unique and common challenges faced by farmers and producers here in the territory. I would like to thank our roundtable guests, including UVI President Dr. David Hall, USVI Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Louis Petersen, USDA-RD Caribbean Area Director Luis Arroyo as well as Sommer Sibilly-Brown – Founder/Executive Director of VI Good Food Coalition, Richard Campbell – Founder of GeoAg, Harith Wickrema and Dawn Henry – Island Green Living, Aminah Saleem – Chief of Staff, UVI-RT Park, Dr. Usman Adamu – Dean of UVI’s School of Agriculture, Frank Dixon – State Director of the Virgin Islands APEX Accelerator, Lakeisha Hood – USDA State Director (FL & VI), Che Axum – Director of the Center for Urban Agriculture and Gardening Education, Brennan Washington of Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE), Gabriella Soto-Velez of the National Center for Appropriate Technology, Madison Charles of the USDA Farm Service Agency and many others.

Honored to join my friend Velshi this morning to remember and honor the service and sacrifice of our Capitol Police, fellow Members of Congress and others who stood to protect our democracy on January 6th, 3 years ago.
The January 6th insurrection was a deadly assault on our democracy incited by former President Trump in a desperate and corrupt attempt to stay in power. As we remember this date, we honor the sacrifice and service of the police officers who defended our Capitol. We must continue to uphold our sacred right to vote, secure our elections against violence and extremism, and defend our democracy.
I would like to thank everyone who attended our National Park Service Town Hall this evening. Your voices and input are invaluable. Tonight’s town hall was a space for us to collect your feedback to share with my colleagues on the Committee of Natural Resources, so I am particularly grateful for all of you who shared whether in person or online.
