Tarun Lak Instagram - Some early Ember performance tests on #elemental back from 2021. This is roughly what our models looked like in animation- before fx, sim, shading and lighting made it look pretty. These were also done while we were working with riggers to figure out appeal and controls we might need to animate her. We were also exploring what fire movement might be incorporated into performance. Some of partial disappearing effects on the arms(we called it presence), head flame size, fire intensity, breaking of skeletal structure were explored here. The big key component that wasn’t figured out by this point was how much we were going to drift fire character movement, especially after they landed in a pose. I had a lot of fun doing these, sound is removed here since internal scratch dialogue was used. #ember #animation #animationtest #pixar

The soul 22/Archimedes argument was a late change replacing a different gag. I had the human world shots but when I saw the new gag cut in I just had to request to animate those too! Tarun Lak Instagram - I joined the #elemental team early in preproduction, back in spring ‘21, before the characters were going to get built. My first assignment was to explore something in 2d that could help inform what we might wanna do with the characters. So I came up with this test- I wanted to see how a fire character would have to perform human like physical actions. Given that she was going to have a delivery scooter, I thought I’d play with that. Fire having no solid definition, would morph, shrink or grow in different situations. It can get lost in quick movement and regrow itself due to the person’s “life force”. What was fun to discover was that fire people would need to exert more energy, equaling more intense fire to lift heavy objects or push/pull anything. The lack of bones or flesh meant they weigh very little so it lent itself to a very lose style of movement, making sure we never felt too much structure in the body, only enough to keep them looking like their design, reading their acting and distinguishable from other fire people. All this also allowed for some really fun loose firey shapes, abstract smears, fire trails, etc, that made these characters uniquely fun to explore and animate. Never thought I’d have a chance to do 2d professionally, even as exploratory tests, so this was really fun to do. More work soon! #pixar #elemental #2danimation #animationtest #ember #lumen

Beautifully written by @shirinshamsi1 , published by @simonkids , the story is based on Shirin’s mother’s experience during the partition. I had the privilege of this being my picture book to illustrate. I cannot stress enough how important this book was for me in its substance. The story follows a girl named Azra who accidentally leaves her favorite doll behind when her family has to all of a sudden move from Dehradun to Lahore, in the midst of the Partition of India. After diving in to research for the book and getting as much information and pictures from the Author’s family, I arrived at the design of the family here. This evolved a bit in some details as I got through the book. Hope to share more in the coming weeks! Tarun Lak Instagram - Some Soul work! It was awesome to get cast these shots- some serious acting from Soul Joe, and some fun comedy from Soul 22. One of the tricky things here was to switch gears to serious to funny really quickly. Luckily the storyboards for this sequence was so good, I just had to not mess it up. The close up of Joe is one of the first times I've had to animate something so sincere- learned a lot from fellow animators and the leadership team. And for the 22 stuff, I was particularly inspired by Chuck Jones Bugs Bunny sensibilities- such fun to animate. Channeling some memories of douchebags while I was growing up, I tried to caricature them in a way that'd make for a character you love to hate. The storyboards for these scenes were inspiring and funny already, so it was more about milking the entertainment value. His unique character design also let itself to some fun posing. The second scene here was a collaboration with two other talented animators, Paulie who handled Cicco and Guido, Maria who animated the police woman and the fisherman while I handled Ercule. The idea that Ercule would slap Cicco in the nose was a happy accident while we were blocking the shot out, luckily it got a laugh so it stayed. Poor Cicco. One of my favorite experiences at pixar was going on a little trip to visit a few barbershops around Oakland with other animators before starting on this sequence. Talking to the barbers there, learning about what they do, why they do it, and a bit about their tools and process informed us so much, and gave us a deeper understanding to bring to Dez's character. One direct piece of observation was tying a neck strip before putting on the barber cape, that I tried to pitch in my shot, so it felt more real and observed. These shots were also a lesson to me in collaborating with other team members and how that can lead to stronger work. Tarun Lak Instagram - Here’s an unfinished “Bench test” scene from #elemental The director, Pete Sohn at one point in preproduction mentioned it would be a great way to discover who Ember and Wade were if they had to sit at a park bench together. What would their interaction be like? Taking that concept I mocked up this scene in some rough drawings, as if they sat at a park bench during a first date. It was a great way to do some test runs on how Fire and Water properties would manifest themselves tied to some performance and how each of their element and personality negatively or positive impact the other. This was also a nice way to figure out how we might get our models to behave this way on a more technical level and what tools and controls we might need. Three of these shots were animated by myself, one of them by the amazing Jessica Torres, and the rest were left unfinished in drawings as we moved on to other assignments. I should also mention these are just the temporary models we animated and tested with, before it gets rendered with work from other departments. Tarun Lak Instagram - Another test from #elemental ! With this one I was interested in exploring how Wade and Ember interact, with both their personality and their element coming into play. How does one influence the other? It was fun to discover how the emotion could play up their elemental nature. When Wade cries, he also melts and loses sense of structure due to his vulnerability. When Ember blows up, her fire intensity could explode momentarily, returning to her natural state when she calms down. Not everything here stayed in the final film, but this helped in early exploration when we’re still throwing around ideas to see what we could do with these unique characters. #ember #wade #pixarelemental #animationtest #characterexploration #2danimation #pixar

Tarun Lak Instagram - Last animation test from #elemental The biggest aspect of the film that drew me to want to work on it was the touching father/daughter relationship. So during preproduction, I really wanted to do a test that showcased what that could feel like, combining it with everything in terms of fire movement mechanics and appeal that we had learnt up until that point. This was originally a scene boarded in some early reels with scratch dialogue, which is why it’s muted here. Tarun Lak Instagram - Last post on Luca. This was a sequence called Rooftop, Luca dreaming about what the moon and stars are and what the human town is like. I had asked to work on these shots because it seemed so endearing, and I wanted to try and animate a quieter scene than I typically do. These quieter scenes were what I loved about Pixar and Ghibli movies, so I'm glad I was trusted with it. It was tricky for me to balance the graphic style of posing and animation we were chasing with the sincerity of acting it needed, but with the help of the rest of the team I think it came together alright. Tarun Lak Instagram - *check my story highlights* A little over a year ago, I wanted to try storyboarding something. At the time, I had recently read a beautiful collection of short stories by Rabindranath Tagore, the legendary Bengali writer. I thought it’d be interesting to try and adapt one of his stories. This was my attempt at telling a simplified version of his story. Some creative liberties were taken, and looking back at it some of the boarding seems rough. But here it is anyway. You can find it in my story highlights. ‘Kabuliwala’ p1 & p2. These were my first shots on the film and it went through a few iterations. The soul 22/Archimedes argument was a late change replacing a different gag. Probably the only time I might show acting reference of myself here 😂 - I found it really useful to quickly get the acting, timing and progression working so I had a clear idea of what to animate. Other than making the gag work, the interesting challenge here was to show that 22 is in Joe's body, not completely used to it yet, and Joe being in a cat. On top of that they were walking, talking, with 22 eating a gyro, with a difficult moving camera to clearly stage it to. My first assignment was to explore something in 2d that could help inform what we might wanna do with the characters. So I came up with this test- I wanted to see how a fire character would have to perform human like physical actions. Given that she was going to have a delivery scooter, I thought I’d play with that. Fire having no solid definition, would morph, shrink or grow in different situations. It can get lost in quick movement and regrow itself due to the person’s “life force”. What was fun to discover was that fire people would need to exert more energy, equaling more intense fire to lift heavy objects or push/pull anything. The lack of bones or flesh meant they weigh very little so it lent itself to a very lose style of movement, making sure we never felt too much structure in the body, only enough to keep them looking like their design, reading their acting and distinguishable from other fire people. All this also allowed for some really fun loose firey shapes, abstract smears, fire trails, etc, that made these characters uniquely fun to explore and animate. One direct piece of observation was tying a neck strip before putting on the barber cape, that I tried to pitch in my shot, so it felt more real and observed. These shots were also a lesson to me in collaborating with other team members and how that can lead to stronger work. The comforting hands over Joe's shoulders gesture was something I would've never thought about, if it wasn't for a fellow animator, Rob Denovan who suggested it to show Dez needed to be comforting Joe in the moment. I have no thumbnails to show here, but as a student I always wondered the kind of thought animators put in before getting into a scene, so I’ve shared some of my notes breaking down the characters and beats involved in these shots. I was only responsible for animating Dez, 22 Joe and Joe cat in the shots in color here. What would their interaction be like? Taking that concept I mocked up this scene in some rough drawings, as if they sat at a park bench during a first date. It was a great way to do some test runs on how Fire and Water properties would manifest themselves tied to some performance and how each of their element and personality negatively or positive impact the other. This was also a nice way to figure out how we might get our models to behave this way on a more technical level and what tools and controls we might need. Three of these shots were animated by myself, one of them by the amazing Jessica Torres, and the rest were left unfinished in drawings as we moved on to other assignments. I should also mention these are just the temporary models we animated and tested with, before it gets rendered with work from other departments. So during preproduction, I really wanted to do a test that showcased what that could feel like, combining it with everything in terms of fire movement mechanics and appeal that we had learnt up until that point. This was originally a scene boarded in some early reels with scratch dialogue, which is why it’s muted here. At the time, I had recently read a beautiful collection of short stories by Rabindranath Tagore, the legendary Bengali writer. I thought it’d be interesting to try and adapt one of his stories. This was my attempt at telling a simplified version of his story. Some creative liberties were taken, and looking back at it some of the boarding seems rough. But here it is anyway.
