I explored the hidden history of Brussels’ sewage system—and the role of wastewater in global health—for this year‘s #WorldToiletDay. Brussels,Belguim

I’m thinking about my dad as I get ready to visit India later this month. We had a great time on this trip in 2008.
I’m in India this week to experience what I believe is its greatest gift: its ability to innovate.
Happy birthday, Leila! You’ve had quite the first year—and I can’t wait to see what you learn, discover, and enjoy in year two.
I caught up with Sam Altman after the OpenAI shake up. It was great to hear that he and his team are more motivated than ever.
I’m so impressed by Savor’s approach to crafting animal fats without animals. The company is getting us one step closer to a world where every meal is made with climate-friendly ingredients.
Palm oil is cheap, odorless, and extremely versatile—which is why it’s found in half of all supermarket products. It’s hard to replace. But its extraction is even harder on the environment, requiring slash-and-burn deforestation that destroys wildlife and devastates the climate. Fortunately, C16 has a bold solution to this big problem.
I got to try Tangyuan for the first time! It’s a traditional food for the Lantern Festival, which marks the end of Lunar New Year celebrations.
At the end of the year, it’s always fun to look back on some of the best books I read. Three came to mind right away—along with some economics courses I always recommend to family and friends. I hope you find something enjoyable to read, watch, or listen to at the link in my bio!
I got to spend the day at Chula Vista Middle School back in April, and I’ve been excited to share what I learned—and why it made me hopeful for a future where more people develop a love for math like mine.

Rosalynn Carter was an extraordinary champion for the world’s poorest, especially women and children. I’ll never forget the time I got to spend with her and President Carter at their home in 2017. She told me about a recent trip they had taken to help build 150 new homes for low-income families through Habitat for Humanity. The story was classic Rosalynn: selfless, warmhearted, and accomplishing something that would be impressive at any age. My thoughts are with the entire Carter family today.
I spent a few days in Senegal for this year’s Grand Challenges meeting with incredible global leaders, scientists, and innovators all working to solve the biggest problems in health. Dakar, Senegal

My heart is broken for the innocent lives lost in the Middle East and the continued suffering of Israelis and Palestinians. May the world find a way to swiftly end the violence, and to build a path toward lasting peace in the region.
