I often talk about the colder regions of the world and am admittedly drawn to them… but to this day, the Napali Coast is still one of the most dramatic and stunning landscapes I’ve had the opportunity to photograph. Some of the steepest, knife edge ridges held together by thriving plant life feels like something you’d only see in Jurassic Park and instantly inspired me to find the aerial perspective during a personal trip with my family in 2018. I shot this video from my iPhone before reels were a thing so I could remember this surreal experience in a little more unfiltered way.
These are the images I normally DON’T share on social media… but behind all of my favorite adventure, passion projects are also commercial shoots. Passion projects don’t always pay the bills and as a freelancer, you take on work that isn’t necessarily the most inspiring to keep your business alive & feed your family – I still do to this day. Even though this type of work isn’t the most exciting like surfing under the northern lights or riding a bike across glaciers in Iceland.. it can still be a lot of fun and I have the utmost respect for creatives who dedicate their craft to this part of the industry.

I heard someone say recently that when we invest in the natural world, it doesn’t give back to us in monetary ways but offers returns that are far more valuable & regenerative to the mind & body than money could ever be… and I couldn’t agree more. Whether you’re drawn to a quick ray of sunshine in your backyard or a multi-day expedition to the Aleutian islands.. I think it’s important to pause for a moment and listen to that call from nature and make the time in our lives to answer. Flipping through the archives from this particular expedition in 2019 for @roark brings out that feeling in me… a sort of ache for the unknown and inspiration for discomfort that leads to a kind of beauty & self reflection only harsh places like these provide.

I jumped out of bed this morning for an early ski touring lap to catch sunrise… but much to my surprise I saw a warm glow radiating from the Reykjanes Peninsula and realized that a new volcano just erupted. I texted my assistant @joelbarger_ from the top of the mountain – who grabbed our long lens and nailed the shot just looking over the bay not far from our new studio. It’s moments like this in Iceland that continue to amaze me… a juxtaposition of normal life and sometimes devastating elements, locals continuing their day like any other Thursday but a beautiful fiery chaos erupts less than 45 minutes away.

“Haddi always made you feel that you were home. In his hugs, in his smile, and especially in the sky. In fact after he passed, Chris and I had a hard time coming back to Iceland…because there was a giant haddi shaped hole here…there still is. Full of joy, charisma, and strong opinions he was unashamed in who he was and he inspired and encouraged everyone around him to live their truth also. I don’t like to think of today as the anniversary of losing him… I prefer to think of today as the beginning of his legacy. He lives on in the humor of his kids, the strength of his love gunnsa, and in everyone who ever shared the cockpit with him. I think of you every time I’m trying to work on pronunciation in Icelandic class and every time I have the urge to call Chris “Chrissy-poo”…your bromance was legendary. We miss you. ❤️”

I’m so lucky to have found a place like Japan in my life… Ever since my first trip I have returned every year. In many ways it has offered a reset to my year and a slight distraction from the chaos of life. I’ve chased typhoon swells here, documented every single body of water touching these islands and made the winter pilgrimage for powder the last 5 winters.
Every trip leaves me with a renewed spirit and gratitude for this culture, the food and most importantly my dear friends who keep inviting me back.
Thanks @iwanairesort family for another special season. And for making this wannabe skier feel cool for a moment.

With all of it’s secret canyons, glaciers, and iconic rivers, the þórsmork valley has been home to many photoshoots for me over the years and felt like a good representation of colors and landscape I wanted my new collection with @dbjourney to represent. We were fortunate to hit the fall weather just right on a crisp day last September to photograph the bags and apply each piece in real-life scenarios that I intended them for. Check out the full collection while stock lasts at the 🔗 in my profile
