BOWIE COLLECTS EDISON AWARD 50 YEARS AGO TODAY
“It’s made out of old fisherman…”
On this day in 1974 (13th February), David Bowie attended a press reception at the Amstel Hotel in Amsterdam, where Ad Visser (host of Dutch music show Top Pop), presented him with the Edison Award and a certificate for the Most Popular Male Vocalist, with particular recognition given to Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars.
Recalling an earlier trip to London to visit David, Visser poured two glasses of an “old fisherman drink”, Schelvispekel*, to toast David’s win.
David made the most of his visit to the Netherlands, including further work on the forthcoming Diamond Dogs album, several photo sessions with the new look and a recording of Rebel Rebel for Top Pop, which was broadcast a few weeks later.
Watch a recently remastered version here on the TopPop YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8BzPxWvdAs (Linktree in bio)
Here’s David speaking about that new ‘pirate’ look in 1993:
“I I had conjunctivitis, so I made the most of it and dressed like a pirate. Stopped just short of the parrot. I had this most incredible jacket that I was wearing that night, it was a bottle-green bolero jacket that Freddie made for me, and he got an artist to paint, using the appliqué technique, this supergirl from a Russian comic on the back. But I took the jacket off during the press conference and somebody stole it.”
The light-fingered journalist who lifted the jacket is well known and has made no attempt to hide their identity, in fact, quite the opposite. So, no need to give them more publicity here.

REBEL REBEL 45 IS FIFTY TODAY
“Hot tramp, I love you so…”
Though the press adverts proclaimed that it was a Valentine’s Day release, Rebel Rebel was actually issued fifty years ago today on the 15th of February 1974. The release, which had already been put back two weeks (original printed release date on demo label is Feb 1st), was an edited version of the song and a first taste from the upcoming Diamond Dogs LP, though it was considered a bit of a curveball compared to much of the music on that album. The single was backed with Queen Bitch.
It was the first release since the dissolution of The Spiders From Mars, though stylistically it may have been more at home on Aladdin Sane, with its up-tempo, Stonesy feel and with an unmistakable and instantly recognisable riff that he was more than grateful to have conjured up, later saying of it: “It’s a fabulous riff! Just fabulous! When I stumbled onto it, it was ‘Oh, thank you!’”.
The track reached #5 on the UK singles chart (Bowie’s sixth Top Five single in the UK), and even managed a placing in the US Billboard Hot 100, no doubt helped by the exclusive New York Mix, which was almost a minute and a half shorter than the regular single mix. The New York Mix was released in North America and Mexico in May 1974 backed with Lady Grinning Soul.
This second version was more urgent than the original, with a backward echo effect on the new la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la backing vocals, castanets, and more general excitement all round…more akin to the live version that would be performed shortly on the US Diamond Dogs tour.

DIAMOND DOGS 50TH ANNIVERSARY VINYL DUE IN MAY
“Keep cool, Diamond Dogs rule, OK…”
DAVID BOWIE DIAMOND DOGS
50th ANNIVERSARY HALF SPEED MASTERED LP
50th ANNIVERSARY PICTURE DISC LP LIMITED EDITION RELEASES
OUT 24th MAY, 2024
PRE-ORDER HERE: https://davidbowie.lnk.to/DiamondDogs50 (Linktree in bio) (Link will be updated throughout the day)
Today (15th February 2024) marks the 50th anniversary of the release of David Bowie’s landmark single ‘REBEL REBEL’, which appeared in a remixed form on Bowie’s eighth and most musically adventurous album of the early 1970s, DIAMOND DOGS.
On 24th May, 2024, the exact day of its Golden Jubilee, DIAMOND DOGS will be issued as a limited edition 50th anniversary half-speed mastered LP and a picture disc LP pressed from the same master. The first single from the album, the aforementioned ‘REBEL REBEL’, reached number 5 in the UK and the album would also reach similar heights on both sides of the Atlantic reaching number 1 in the UK and number 5 in the USA.
The writing of the album was influenced by Bowie not being able to secure the rights for a theatrical production of George Orwell’s 1984 and by the work of William S. Burroughs, whom Bowie had appeared with in a two-way interview feature for Rolling Stone titled: BEAT GODFATHER MEETS GLITTER MAINMAN.
The songs on the album created an urban apocalyptic scenario with Bowie appearing on the cover as a controversial half-man, half-dog hybrid painted by the Belgian artist Guy Peellaert, who used photographs as reference taken for the project by the world-renowned photographer Terry O’Neill. Since its release, tracks from DIAMOND DOGS have been covered by artists such as Beck, Tina Turner, Duran Duran, Def Leppard, Joan As Police Woman, Dead Or Alive, The Struts and many others.

GOODBYE NICKY GRAHAM
This morning, Kevin Cann posted about the sad passing of Nicky Graham whose career with David Bowie may have been relatively short, but he made an important contribution, nevertheless.
+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – +
Very sad to report that musician, songwriter and producer Nicky Graham has died aged 79.
He will forever be appreciated by the worldwide Bowie community for his help and support for David in the early days of GEM management, where by day he would make endless phone calls to venues around the UK booking David Bowie and the Spiders’ earliest legendary shows, and by night would join David and band on stage and play piano – dressed as a Spider from Mars, with the Spiders from Mars.
He worked for and with David and band for six months, from February to August 72, and was with them when they made their never to be forgotten Top of the Pops ‘Starman’ appearance that same year.
A genuinely nice man, well respected in the music industry and greatly missed by his family, Nicky passed away on Saturday, February 3rd 2024.
