“I have been a follower of your teachings for many years and I find it very insightful and helpful in general.
I feel conflicted about my life’s “meaning”, that is, what is it that I am really here to learn or give or do in this lifetime?
I believe our souls are eternal and that we come to this life for a purpose, but it is difficult at times to understand just what that is.
I am very fortunate and grateful for the blessings that I have in this life (through no doing of my own, but really, just due to the life I was placed in.).
I feel that much of my time here is “wasted” and I don’t really know what the path is.
My life is easy and blessed and I am compassionate about life (particularly when it comes to those who have no voice such as animals and children).
I am loving and caring, but don’t feel like I am doing anything that really “matters”.
I really don’t want to have to return to another lifetime in order to learn things, possibly in a more difficult life situation, which some feel happens to “evolved souls”.
Rather than feeling content in my earthly skin, I am just feeling that I am missing the point of my presence here.
I am healthy, but I miss being young (I am 61 years old and feeling old for the first time.).
Why am I missing the “point”?”
My response:
Based on your account, I don’t think you have been missing the point of a meaningful life.
It’s just that your self-critical mind is telling you it’s not enough.
You seem to be comparing your current life to some ideal life that has great purpose, but you cannot live an ideal life, you can only live your actual life.
Life purpose is not something you strive to figure out and then attain; purpose and meaning are what you find in your everyday actions and thinking—your smiles, your hugs, or sharing a conversation or a walk with someone…
Purpose reveals itself in the way you help those less fortunate.
You contribute your unique quality to the betterment of the world just through your compassion and gratitude.
Once you stop trying to be something or find a purpose outside of yourself, you will realize you are already living your purpose and always have been.
Love,
Deepak
