“I’m wondering what my mind should be doing when I’m meditating.
Should I be saying the mantra the whole time or should my mind be clear?
I can’t seem to concentrate on the mantra.
I don’t know if I’m getting the gist of meditations.
I’m a beginner and it’s just not making sense.”
My response:
The gist of meditation is that it is a way to experience your core awareness beyond the confines of the active, conceptual mind.
You don’t need to concentrate on the mantra.
Concentrating just makes the mind more active.
Let your attention easily be with the mantra, and when it drifts off to other thoughts, don’t resist that, or discipline your mind.
Only once you realize you are no longer thinking the mantra, you can gently return to it.
The aim of meditation isn’t about the mantra or thoughts, it’s about cultivating the awareness that resides between the mantra and thoughts.
That simple, quiet consciousness is your true self.
It exists between thoughts and is also the background of all thoughts.
It is like the computer screen on which all possible images are projected.
As you practice meditation daily without expectation or judgment, that silent self naturally begins to emerge and that is what brings the benefits of a clearer mind, healthier body, a loving heart, and a luminous spirit.

Deepak

“I want to understand, what is awareness?
And how can one build this awareness in daily life?”
My response:
Awareness is who you truly are.
When you read these words, awareness is that thing which has that experience.
Consciousness is the substratum upon which all thought, experience, and action takes place.
It is your timeless, unconditioned self.
You establish this awareness with daily meditation or mindfulness wherein consciousness becomes more awake and more dominant.
In time, you will come to realize that this awareness is your core being and that you are no longer defined or limited by your ego, mind, or body.
Love,
Deepak

“I find it very hard to stay calm and egoless in a situation of confrontation with another, for example, when somebody is openly rude my gut reaction is to be rude back because that is my conditioning and I was taught to defend myself and not let others take advantage of me, etc.
I see that clearly when I am cool, but when I am in the midst of a situation I feel an overwhelming urge to fight back, so much so it hurts if I don’t.
I fear I may just be repressing feelings if I act cool and walk away (thinking I am acting “egoless”).
In any case, I am always left with a feeling that I am doing something wrong.
Either failing to be egoless or repressing feelings.
I am confused as to where the line is between acting egoless and letting others ride all over you.”
My response:
There are other options to rude behavior besides retaliating with rudeness or repressing your feelings.
Both of these actions are ineffective.
Retaliating still leaves you with a toxic feeling and so does trying to repress your reaction.
The best way to deal with rudeness is to stay conscious and aware of your feelings while you respond.
Initially, it may not change your outer behavior much, but over time you will discover that this easy presence of awareness will keep you more and more centered in your strength leaving you unaffected by the other person’s disrespectful behavior.
This self-awareness will also begin to dissolve the unpleasantness or toxic aftermath of these encounters so you won’t be carrying it around later.

Deepak

“I had been flirting with meditation sporadically for the past few months but never doing it properly and regularly missing sessions.
Now, for the last week after doing more research I have been doing thorough, disciplined meditation sessions twice 20 minutes a day.
As it’s so soon it’s hard to pinpoint any differences in me.
However, the last couple of mornings (after meditating the night before and before my morning meditation), I have felt very emotional, even to the point of tears for no particular reason and when thinking about my parents.
They are both fairly elderly but fine at the moment, so I have no idea why now I’m feeling so emotional.
I know people can experience strong emotions during meditation but when it happens during the day or the morning after, is this still a symptom of the meditation? Is this a good sign that meditation is working?
Your insight would be much appreciated as I’m a little worried.”
My response:
It can sometimes happen when we first begin meditating that we tap into and start releasing old emotional tension and conditioning.
This healing process may continue after meditation and express itself as an exaggerated emotional sensitivity or tearfulness.
Don’t be concerned, it is a healthy indication that your meditation practice is helping to heal some past emotional pains.
Once that old trauma has cleared away, it will leave you stronger, more open, and loving.

Deepak

“Is there a way to manifest forgiveness with someone else?
In the case of a broken marriage where one partner left.
The other partner has asked for forgiveness for her errors (taking him for granted); and has forgiven him for abandonment.
Is there any way to manifest forgiveness; and a second chance of forgiveness?
How does one manifest a fresh start?”
My response:
Forgiveness is not just letting go of resentment, anger, and vengeance, it also requires that we can release our insistence on our perception of injustice.
That limited perspective is the basis for our emotional response, and we need to recognize that this view is creating a toxic negativity that is only hurting our Self.
If we allow other valid viewpoints of the same experience, we can begin to let go of that feeling of injustice and healing will start automatically.
But forgiveness is something only you can do. It is very personal.
You can’t orchestrate it or manifest it in another person. It has to unfold when the person is ready.
Love,
Deepak
Your senses do not give you information about the so-called external world. They do something much more profound. Understanding the true nature of sensory experience and experience of that understanding is the key to all liberation from suffering.

“How can awareness eliminate negativity and overwhelming, and feelings of separation?
How can I reach discipline to go beyond ego?
How to get WILL?”
My response:
Self-awareness is your true self which is ever-present and unlimited.
This is your essential reality and this awareness is always there in the background of every thought and action.
The ego is your self built on the belief in separation.
Its entire activity is directed toward survival, defense, and desperation.
To eliminate negativity, separation, and the feeling of overwhelm, you don’t need discipline or willpower—you simply need to recognize your true nature as pure awareness.

Deepak

“I have a question about breathing during meditation.
Is it best to breathe in and out of the nose during meditation, or exhale through the mouth?
I just meditated for the first time exhaling through the mouth and had a much deeper meditation.”
My response:
During your meditation practice, don’t try to regulate or control your breath in any way.
Breathe easily and naturally just as you would if you were sitting quietly and not paying attention to your breath.
If you want to make use of specific breathing techniques like pranayama, It is recommended to do them before you meditate.

How can you tap into your quantum body and quantum brain to live a healthier, longer life? 🧠
The idea of quantum energy might seem like a radical new idea pushing the boundaries of science. But the basis for these ideas go back thousands of years, when ancient healers understood that the body, mind, spirit, and universe were connected in fundamental ways. ✨
As science and technology have advanced, we’re finally able to study this interconnectivity and use it to radically change the way we live, grow, and heal. 🧬
We’re so excited to welcome Dr. Deepak Chopra to our show today. 💡
🎧 Listen to our latest podcast episode 371: How to Navigate Your Quantum Mind & Body for a Longer Life (less than 19 mins)
@deepakchopra is the founder of the Chopra Foundation and is a Clinical Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of California, San Diego, among other positions. He’s written over ninety books, including his newest, Quantum Body: The Science of Living a Longer, Healthier, More Vital Life.
The quantum experience is the interconnectivity of everything. It’s understanding how all your cells know what every other cell in your body is doing instantaneously and simultaneously.
Listen in as Deepak explains what consciousness is, how it creates the mind, and the power you can wield when you unlock your quantum body and brain to live a longer, healthier life. 💚
