The world requires exceptional men and women to lead in uncharted territories. When I reached my towering height of 6’7″ at the age of 18, the ballet world seemed to turn its back on me. The Paris Opera Ballet suggested I pursue modeling instead, saying, “You have a better chance in modeling; ballet dancers are typically shorter.” Undeterred, I left France for the United States. It was Gerald Arpino, Mr. A, who welcomed me into his company with open arms. At the Joffrey Ballet, my height was not seen as a disadvantage; rather, it was embraced as unique. Mr. A pushed me to realize my potential. I am forever indebted to Mr. A for giving me a career in ballet. His belief in me has left an indelible mark on my life. You are always in my thoughts and prayers. With all my love, happy birthday, Mr. A (01/14/1923-10/29/2008

This picture was taken in the last seconds of the Lar Lubovitch version of Othello.’ I remember feeling exhausted at that moment, right at the end of the three-act ballet. My forearm and legs were cramping, but I was thrilled to have performed to my fullest and managed to get through the entire ballet Pic: Herbert Migdoll
Traveling, multitasking, and pushing projects to the finish line. Chicago wasn’t kind to me today and decided to bring in fog; flights are canceled 🙃.

Lar Lubovitch’s production of ‘Othello’ was one of the most demanding ballet I have danced. The intricate partnering and untraditional shapes were challenging. The hard work lay in making these partnering shapes look good through smooth transitions. In this scene, Iago begins to poison Othello’s mind, making him believe that Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio. Initially, Othello can not fathom Desdemona behaving in such a manner. However, Iago’s insinuations slowly seep into Othello’s imagination, leading him to consider the possibility as true. Dancer @fabricecalmels Matthew Adamczyk

The final stretch toward Sunday performances! 🩰 I’m thoroughly enjoying my rehearsals with Larissa every day, she is such a passionate dancer and so committed. This piece originally premiered in 1971. While these works were groundbreaking in the early ’70s, in 2023, they may appear differently to an audience accustomed to abundant content. I’m genuinely curious to see how the humor from that era has aged in today’s society. 😄 Tickets are still available don’t miss out! https://mytickets.auditoriumtheatre.org/4264/4303?z=0 #BalletPerformance #TimelessArt #CuriousMinds
🩰 Let’s unravel the mystery of the Entrechat Trois in ballet together! In France, tradition holds strong – the entrechat typically lands on two feet, unless it’s performed “de Volé,” swooping down on one foot. Much like the elegant ‘Brisé,’ and its daring cousin, the ‘Brisé Vole’ 🌬️. Diving into history, the Entrechat Trois and the Royale intertwine in a royal dance. Lesson says, King Louis XIV gracefully claimed the entrechat trois, naming it ‘Royale’ after mastering its majestic leaps. A king’s touch, perhaps? 👑 But let’s jeté across to the US! The Entrechat Trois takes a twist, landing on a single foot. It makes you wonder – where does the “de Volé” flutter in this choreography? 🤔 While I would say France is right ,lol. I want to hear your side of the story .Join me in the dance of debate! Share your thoughts and let’s explore the fascinating stages of the Entrechat Trois together! 🌐💬 #BalletDebate #EntrechatTrois
Explaining concepts thoroughly to students ensures deep comprehension and builds a solid foundation. But it’s not just about details. Revealing the “why” behind teachings offers context, making lessons more relatable and meaningful. Providing this broader picture aids retention and prepares students for real-world applications. Simply diving into content without context can hinder understanding. Coupling detailed explanations with the larger significance fosters an environment where students grasp, retain, and effectively utilize their knowledge.
That summer, I auditioned for the Joffrey Ballet in New York before heading back to France. The intensity of the day at the Joffrey Ballet School is still vivid in my memory. Hundreds had applied, and the selection process was incredibly rigorous. We’d enter the room in groups of 60 or more, execute a few moves at the barre, and watch as nearly 90% of the hopefuls were eliminated. This went on all morning and into the afternoon. To my amazement, I was offered a contract that very day. Feeling grateful and wanting to soak in more of the city, I took the afternoon to explore New York further. I found myself at the top of the Twin Towers, sitting on a little metal tilted bench facing the vast windows. As the sun began its descent, I stayed, lost in thought and prayer. Afterwards, I headed straight to the airport for my red-eye flight to Paris. Weeks later, while visiting my grandparents in the south of France, the unthinkable news flashed across our French TV screen. The images felt surreal, like a scene from a movie. The United States under attack? The very idea was hard to comprehend. With the INS shutting its doors, my return to the U.S. was delayed until the following year. 9/11 changed everything. We must never forget and always keep in our prayers the souls lost that day.
Arpino played a pivotal role in shaping my dance career. I owe him everything. He wasn’t just a mentor; he was like a father figure, not only to me but to an entire generation of dancers. This celebration was a long-awaited tribute to the dedicated Joffrey dancers who poured their hearts into making the Joffrey Ballet what it is today. It was a moment to honor them and to pay our respects to Mr. Arpino, whose influence on the dance world is immeasurable(Gerald Arpino was a renowned American dancer and choreographer, co-founder of the Joffrey Ballet a significant figure in the world of dance.) I’m deeply grateful to the Arpino Foundation and Moffat family for affording me this incredible opportunity. I’d also like to acknowledge Complexions Dance, Meg, Larissa, and Charles for their unwavering support and for joining me on this remarkable journey. Lastly, a big thank you to those who’ve provided space for A & A Ballet, joffrey School, and Visceral Dance to thrive 📸 @cherylmannphoto
