Ruthven Barracks, Badenoch. This was a rallying point for the defeated Jacobites in 1746 after the disaster at Culloden, the last pitched battle against the British crown on home soil. Highlanders arrived here hoping to mount a counter punch, only to have a letter arrive from their talisman, Stuart claimant to the throne Bonnie Prince Charlie, that all was lost and they should save themselves. (‘Let every man seek his own safety in the best way he can”.) Silence, then wind, then surely ‘The big blonde prick!’ and other suitable exclamations were heard as the defeated clansman took to the heather to be hunted down for months. Tartan, Gaelic & an entire culture put to the sword till all that was left was a kilted, singing Harry Lauder in the 1900’s music halls of Hamilton.
