Yesterday was a heavy day at @palisadestahoe. In an instant we went from the highest of highs to lowest of lows.
My favorite lift in the world just opened and there was no line and the riding was epic.
Of the few 100 people, I knew most of them. I was with my kid and life couldn’t be better as we slashed, bashed and laughed our back to an empty lift line.
On our second run we took a similar line. Half way down I went left around a terrain feature and @cassjonessnow went right toward our first run tracks to rebate an air.
When I got to the bottom he was not there even though he was in front of me. 10 seconds later I hear, “there was an avalanche, lift is closed.”
Nervously I called Cass concerned but not panicked considering I last saw him at the bottom of our line.
He didn’t answer but instantly called back. He rode up to the avi as it was happening and was the first one on the scene. “There was an avi, I am helping a guy out who is hurt,” he says. He stabilized the guy, gave him his gloves and jacket until patrol came and then helped probe.
Overcome with relief but still sick over reports on two people buried I helplessly waited to see if I could be of service.
Miraculously one person was saved by a heroic effort by Tom Day and others who went to the last seen point of the buried snowboarder, got a probe strike and dug him out after a few minutes unharmed.
Devastatingly the other buried person perished.
Incredibly sobering that our first run tracks were buried by a couple feet of avi debris.
My heart bleeds for the friends and family of the deceased.
Gratitude to the community effort on the rescue.

You taught us more by doing than saying.
To give people the benefit of the doubt and to never judge a book by its cover, the car they drove or the house they lived in.
That worrying about weather is a waste of time and the “love of sport days” are often the best days.
You showed us that the “arts” could “open up the other side of your brain and take you for ride.”
That books are cool, writing too.
To focus on the process not the outcome.
To ignore the critics and arm chair quarterbacks and to dive into the ring and give it your all.
That your word is everything.
To have empathy for people and “walk a mile in their shoes.”
That holding grudges is a waste of time and accept people for who they are.
That family is everything.
To not accept societal norms and to chase our dreams.
That our destiny is in our hands and that hard work solves most problems.
That life is always better with music.
That some lines can be crossed while others can’t.
That your wife is always right.
That hustle and grit is more important than talent.
To not sweat the small stuff, it’s all small stuff.

#mindsurfmonday Close to optimal tide for this face right now. Last year we had the wonderful problem of having our features and cliffs swallowed up and evaporated by all the snow.

Flowing over blind rolls is the hardest thing to do riding lines.
Coming in from the side can help but the cornice kept me just far enough off the ridge to not see the entry.
However the east tilt on the bank was brighter than the rest of the snow making it enough of a marker to allow my to cautiously flow into the line.

This past week we have been going hard in the Tetons riding every type of snow possible (minus deep pow). Mostly ice, chalk, corn, refrozen corn, sun crust, wind board, and sastrugi.
Early season is all about stacking days and getting strong so I am ready later in the year when the “day of days” presents itself.
Viewing the current situation through this lense one can look at the past month in the western NA as optimal “training conditions.”
Here are a few highlights from the softer sidecountry portion of #tetontrainingcamp.
