Just back from an awesome couple nights out family winter camping in our area. Hand lining this fish in on 6lb test took some time but I landed my PB from this species. Can anyone tell me what kind of fish this is? Stay tuned for the video on this adventure and it won’t be long until we head out again.

On day 7 of our trip on the Stikine River we got to paddle among ice bergs that had calved off of Great Glacier. It was a pretty cool sight to see!

We were camped at a spot that had recently been used by local Tahltan for a salmon netting operation. It was late in the morning when our dog North came trotting out of the bush barking and looking back over his shoulder. He remained alert and positioned himself infront of two trails that lead into camp. Moving from one to the other. I figured there was a good chance he saw and smelled a black bear back in the bush.
Just to let the bear know we weren’t good people to mess with, I decided to make some noise to scare it off so I fired bear banger. The banger cartridges and pen launcher at made by TruFlare and you can buy flares that screw into the pen launcher too. It’s at times like this that I’m happy I trained North from a pup to not be afraid of loud noises.
Check out more from this adventure down Northern B.C.’s Stikine River into Alaska and see if the bear kept lurking. This is an excerpt from Ep. 9 (link in bio).
What do you think? Are bear bangers an effective bear deterrent?
After a freak windstorm blew our canoe into the Stikine River with our fishing rods in it, I had to make a new one using a stick and snare wire for guides. Get caught up on my current film series “Into Alaska” through the link in my bio. For more.

(Check out the full film covering the following through the link in my bio): It had been raining for nearly 24 hours straight, soaked after traveling about 30kms down the remote, Stikine River by canoe, we were searching for a cabin where we hoped to get out of the rain and dry out the kid’s clothes. Our river notes were over 30 years old so, we didn’t know if the cabin was even still there. After we almost gave up the search, we found it. It was blocked by thick vegetation and nestled into a stand of massive Sitka Spruce trees. We enjoyed a delicious meal and the warmth of the cabin before we pushed off the next morning….the rain hadn’t let up at all through the night. We traveled a good distance down river that day despite the relentless rain and we got to the Great Glacier area. The following day was me and my wife @torigoesoutside ‘s wedding anniversary and we celebrated with pancakes for breakfast and then portaged a good distance into the glacier’s outwash lake where we were met with the surreal site of many beautiful icebergs that had calved off the glacier. Stay tuned for the following episode where we we’ve out canoe through the amazing ice formations.

As we made our way further down the Stikine River into Alaska, the environment and climate became more rainforest. Most days it rained all day long. When we find a campsite for the night the first thing I need to do is start a fire for my family. We’ve been paddling all day long and we’re drenched to the bone.
In wet conditions it can be almost impossible to find dry wood. I usually like to find standing dead wood that is off the ground so it’s not rotting from being damp. And sometimes standing dead wood can be wet too. I found a dead spruce tree that was standing and it was bone dry on the inside. You have to split them down by batoning kindling, whittling fine tinder and splitting the larger pieces down.
