Now, for the first time, researchers have calculated just how much stored carbon from the seafloor is churned up from trawling. A new study shows that 370m tonnes of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere from bottom trawling alone – an amount that scientists say is “too big to ignore.” It’s time to recognize the impact of the industrial marine hunting industry and include these emissions in climate action plans.
