There, the guests were invited to take home a chestnut cake from Natsuko Shoji’s restaurant, été. Natsuko stayed at the venue, Hyatt Regency in Kyoto, for 3 days leading up to the event to make 300 sets. I would like to thank her sincerely. We started working with Natsuko Shoji at the beginning of the pandemic—first in March 2020, when we collaborated on her cake, Fleurs d’été (mango), and chocolates. After that, we were invited to have dinner at her restaurant, a very small establishment that only seats 6 people, with a menu of continuous surprises. Your party absolutely had to be 6 people. It was already an extremely exclusive establishment, but then, in the blink of an eye, she became a world-renowned chef. But because we have known each other since early in her career, she kindly accommodated our request this time. Everyone is of course excited during the party, but I think the true value of a party is tested when people reflect on it on their way home or at home afterwards. In that sense, the cake that Natsuko created for us is a work of art that will rewrite your memories with something even more wonderful when you take a bite. Natsuko-san, who lives in Japan, is the one and only, super-duper genius. I am so lucky that I got to know her. And I am truly grateful for her contribution for this event. Takashi Murakami Instagram – On February 2, from 8 to 10 pm, a dinner party was held for my “Takashi Murakami: Mononoke Kyoto” exhibition, where about 5,000 cherry blossoms were in full bloom (80% of the flowers in bloom!) at once. Floral artist Makoto Azuma (AMKK) is the one who pulled off this tremendous feat. Makoto Azuma is a floral artist who has been creating flower arrangements in outer space, executing a large floral installation deep under the sea, arranging flowers in a frigid world of absolute zero, and growing plants in a kind of perpetually circulating nature device invented by humans long ago. He is an artist with a concept of symbiosis between humans and plants, who works with flower as his theme. Twenty years ago, when I received flowers from Mr. Koichi Inaba, the president of the management company of the folk duo, Yuzu, I was very much impressed; they were arranged by Mr. Azuma. Later, I saw Mr. Azuma in a TV documentary, sobbing and stomping in frustration. Intrigued by this very unusual person, I went to visit him at his studio in an old house in Azabu. I really wished to organize a dinner with cherry blossoms as the theme, so I approached Mr. Azuma around mid-December last year. He kindly and readily agreed and immediately got to work: He cut 5,000 Cherry branches, put them in a greenhouse, closely managed the temperature, and on February 2, the very day of the dinner, he made the cherry blossoms bloom at the optimal 80%. I guess he is what you would rightfully call a genius. He really realized an installation of cherry blossoms in full bloom, filling the venue with the smell of beautifully cut flowers, which left us gaping in awe. Takashi Murakami Instagram – The “Takashi Murakami Mononoke Kyoto” exhibition opened on February 2. JP THE WAVY produced and sang the theme song, “Mononoke Kyoto”, for the exhibition. The reason why I asked JP THE WAVY to write the song for me was because I happened to see a group of children around second to fourth grades dancing energetically to his song “Pick N Choose” at their hip-hop dance recital. I became extremely excited, sensing that this was the long-awaited dawn of Japanese hip-hop. To draw an analogy, it seemed comparable to the dawn of Japanese rock music marked by the appearance of the band, Happy End! Whoaaaaa! I couldn’t sit still, so I reached out by DM-ing WAVY’s Instagram, and he responded immediately; by midnight that day, astonishingly, he was at my studio. That was toward the end of November 2023. He started making the music at a tremendous speed, we exchanged numerous LINE messages back and forth, and I was able to attend the first recording in early December. From there, things progressed rapidly and, at the end of the year, on December 30, he completed the song. WAVY stayed at my studio for about 8 hours during the lyric writing process and kindly picked up a lot of ideas from me. After that, I created the WAVY character as a creative response from me. And finally, on February 2, at the opening reception that started at 6 pm, WAVY actually performed with the kid dancers, and then again at the dinner party from 8 pm, he also had his own performance. His stage costume was made by PROLETA RE ART at the suggestion of WAVY. You can listen to the theme song “Mononoke Kyoto” written by JP THE WAVY by scanning the QR code at the end of my exhibition.
