It’s a VERY surreal feeling to be sitting on the couch with your wife watching one of your all time favorite TV shows, when out of nowhere one of your favorite characters starts quoting your book (!!) SO FREAKING COOL. Thank you to @briankoppelman and the entire team at @sho_billions for the love! 🙏❤️ #unreasonablehospitality
OUCH (!!) That hurts… but as I always say: “praise is affirmation, criticism is investment.” Thank you, dear reviewer, for taking the time to invest in me. 🙏❤️ Also, only somewhat related (as writing an online review and providing criticism aren’t entirely the same thing) but here are my six rules for giving thoughtful criticism: 1- Criticize the behavior, not the person. 2- Criticize without emotion. 3- Criticize in private. 4- Sarcasm is never appropriate. 5- Be willing to criticize yourself as well. 6- Give people the benefit of the doubt (ask the question before you say the thing.) #unreasonablehospitality
That moment when it becomes clear that YOU are the plus one 😂
Where there is tension, there is passion. Embrace it… it’s a beautiful thing, and leaning into it can yield beautiful results. #unreasonablehospitality
Since the release of my book I’ve come to really love and respect a TON of people in the real estate agent community- the best of them embody the ideas of Unreasonable Hospitality more than most… as evidenced here. Introducing the sixth edition of Unreasonable Hospitality out in the World- submitted by Linda Besk Turrentine of Stillwater, Minnesota. 🏠🧸❤️ #unreasonablehospitality
When you create a culture of Unreasonable Hospitality, the people who work for you are no longer just selling a product that someone else created, they are imbuing the experience with their own creativity… and the roadmap is simple: 1- Be present. 2- Take what you do seriously but don’t take yourself so seriously. 3- One size fits one. Introducing the eighth edition of Unreasonable Hospitality Out in the World, “Happy Meal” submitted by Steve Gilman of Harrisonburg, Virginia. 🍔 If this one sounds a little familiar, that might be why I love it so much 🙂 #unreasonablehospitality 🍍🌎
Playing The (not so) Newlywed Game with my amazing wife. Pretty sure I lost the game, and also 100% confident I won the marriage lottery. Happy almost Valentine’s Day y’all ❤️
Sarah Robbins, of 21c Hotels said: “if you are never prepared to be wrong, you’re never going to do anything original.” SO TRUE. Real innovation is only possible if you’re willing to fail – you can’t change the game if you are always playing it safe. #unreasonablehospitality #welcomechicago
There’s nothing more energizing than seeing the look on someone else’s face when they receive a gift that you are responsible for giving. It can so quickly become the most beautiful addiction, because once you’ve felt that feeling once, you want to feel it over and over again. Generous is contagious, and with a bit of creativity it’s amazing how fast it can go viral. Introducing the seventh edition of Unreasonable Hospitality out in the World “Reverse Offering” submitted by Gabe deGarmeaux of New Braunfels, Texas. 🍍🌎
Spent yesterday doing some delicious R&D for a little project I’m collaborating on… more soon 🙃 #unreasonablehospitality
Next time you find yourself pursuing a relationship, just try being a bit more unreasonable. Give people that sense of belonging, give them a memory a will last a lifetime. It will transform your business- but I can also promise you this- it will feel really, really good. Introducing the tenth edition of Unreasonable Hospitality out in the World, submitted by Courtney Capata of Charleston, South Carolina #unreasonablehospitality
As I’ve been traveling around and talking about the book with different people from different businesses, I’ve found myself learning from new perspectives and thinking about so many new things I want to share. So I’m excited to announce the upcoming release of the Unreasonable Hospitality Newsletter! It will arrive in your inbox every other week filled with ideas and insights, stories of Unreasonable Hospitality out in the world, and (by popular demand) more inspiration from my dad, Frank. Coming this Fall… Sign up through link in bio (and get a chance to win a personalized signed copy of the book when you do ✍️📖❤️) #unreasonablehospitality
So much love and appreciation for ALL the people that made yesterday possible. The AMAZING speakers who accepted our invitations to take the stage and inspire, the audience who breathed life into the day, the sponsors for their support in making it all happen, the many (many) members of the team who served with such graciousness, the chefs who kept us nourished, the baristas who kept us awake… but super special thanks to these two, Natasha and Maren, who invested countless hours focusing on (and pouring over) the thousands of details that make the Welcome Conference a reality. On behalf of all of us who ended the day with our gas tanks filled, WE APPRECIATE YOU! #welcome 📷 by @bcanlis
There are few things more honoring than someone choosing to be a regular at your spot. In so many industries (but restaurants especially) there are so many choices, always a new place to try. So for someone to decide that in spite of that they want to be with you regularly? Pretty cool. But it brings with it a responsibility- if someone is consistently pursuing a relationship with you, you need to do the same in return. Care a little bit more. Try a little bit harder. Introducing the 11th edition of Unreasonable Hospitality out in the World, submitted by Sother Teague of NY, NY. #unreasonablehospitality
Great leaders ask for help, great leaders say “I’m sorry”, great leaders are comfortable using the words “I don’t know.” The only way you can truly follow someone is if you trust them, and you can’t genuinely trust someone if they pretend to be perfect, because NOBODY is perfect. Vulnerability is a superpower. In both service and leadership, it’s time to make saying “I don’t know” okay. #unreasonablehospitality
No matter what you do for a living, you can make the choice to be in the hospitality industry. But as powerful it is to make that choice at work, it’s even more powerful to make it in life. Being creative and intentional in how you show up for the people you love is an extraordinarily beautiful thing. Introducing the ninth edition of Unreasonable Hospitality out in the World, submitted by Jody Vaillancourt of Vermont. #unreasonablehospitality ❤️
Our past informs who we are but it doesn’t have to define our future. We need to learn from our experiences, and still be open to the endless opportunities that lie ahead. #unreasonablehospitality

Wise words from the great Richard Melman of @lettuceentertainyou. In service we all know the oxygen mask metaphor- how you can’t help care for others if you don’t first care for yourself. But the same is true in leadership- you can’t help develop others until you first develop yourself. @welcomeconference #unreasonablehospitality
If you’ve worked with me, read my book, or heard me speak, you know how much I talk about my dad, and all he has taught me over the course of my life and career. Put differently, I quote him A LOT. But of all the lessons he’s taught me, I find myself sharing this one more than all the rest. Adversity is a terrible thing to waste. We can’t control what life throws at us… but we can control how we react to moments of adversity, how we allow them to push us, what we learn from them, how we use them to help us grow. Head over to thewelcomeconference.com to see his entire speech from the 2017 conference. ❤️🐐#unreasonablehospitality
Love this quote by the amazing Dr. John Medina. Being empathetic is at the core of being hospitable, and not assuming that others understand what’s in your head is a powerful display of empathy. When implementing a new rule, take the time to explain the reasoning behind it. Same goes when you’re making a change within your organization, or making any decision that impacts others. What’s obvious to you is obvious ONLY to you. Never assume that people know what you’re thinking. If you want to show respect and empathy to those around you, invest as much time in communicating the why as you do the what. #unreasonablehospitality
