We outside. I’ve been a SAG-AFTRA member for 17 years and have watched my residuals dwindle away with the rise of streaming services. I was a “recurring guest star” in 12 of 13 episodes of a very popular show on a very popular streaming service and walked away essentially losing money from every episode I worked. At the time, I fought for a slight raise considering how much work I was putting in. (12 pages of memorized legal jargon a day, traveling out of town for every episode) and the response was “We can’t do that, but we hope she’s having fun!” 🤬 And forget about ever seeing a residual from that project. This is my livelihood! I don’t need it to be fun, I need it to pay my bills! A decade ago, residuals enabled me to survive years of unemployment due to health issues and helped me keep insurance to be able to treat those health issues. Now? There’s no way that would happen. I have been so fortunate to work so much over the last seventeen years but I’m scared of what the future holds without huge systemic change within the industry and its treatment of anyone below the 1% wealth bubble. This effects all of us. The brand of billionaire capitalism that is creating a greater gap between the middle class and the oligarchs running EVERY industry is disgraceful. As @dmgproductions put it so succinctly “I thought FDR fixed this…” I’m not even broaching the topic of AI because it’s too preposterous to wrap my puny human artist brain around. So now, we’re out here. At least Judy is “having fun!” #sagaftrastrong #wgastrong #fairpayforlaborers

The last month has been filled with illnesses both human and canine and injuries of all sorts- a real cornucopia of horrors over here. One great big shining light was hearing @adriannelenker lecture on songwriting every week. I will try not to kowtow too deeply for fear of yet another physical malady BUT. Adrianne is magic. The @school_of_song offers so much goodness all the time with musical heroes casually tossing out genius via Zoom. I wrote a few songs and decided to put this one up because I kind of like it and the screen saver on our projection screen was giving its all. Inspired by a photograph, we did some free writing, tuned the guitar to an unfamiliar tuning, and went to town for a few days. And yes I absolutely ripped off a Brautigan poem.
Thank you @tessasimages for the most beautiful month in Minnesota. To @erinmaemiller for facilitating the craziness. Thank you @etiennekellici for being the talented, kind, inquisitive kid you are. Thank you @billheckyes for being such an exceptional scene partner and delightful human/lightning photographer. Thank you @missmacmuah for bringing your team of makeup witches and introducing us all to Frank the Weiner Pit of dreams. Thank you Carol Kane for making my childhood dreams come true. Thank you @carmelazumbado @thehaleyjacobsen and @cjack930 for your immense talent and humor. Thank you @_carlo_rinaldi_ for capturing every moment with exceptional beauty. Thank you to all the kids for bringing their authentic brilliance. To the parents for supporting their kids dreams by sacrificing their time. To every crew member for tolerating the heat and cold and snow and rain and fucking BUGS to be with us all. To Lou for his risotto, time management, and Titanic stories. To Minnesota for your landscapes and people and natural phenomena. To summarize: I am grateful. Cannot wait to see what we made. #boundarywaters
Claude and I decided to stay home and learn @jonimitchell’s 4th of July song that’s really much more about ambiance than patriotism which makes sense coming from (me in this strange country and) a Canadian. As always with the dog, it’s a duet. It’s such a beautiful song. Surrealists inventing nights. Crickets on the recording. Quiet car rides with your beloved. It feels like what you want every summer night to embody. Come for that and stay for the forgotten lyrics, weird fifth fret, and crotch licking. Goodnight!
A wrap for me on a very special project. 🛶🦌⛏️🍉🚲🏠👨👩👦👵🏻❤️
Happy Halloween and a blessed Samhain from Doggy Parton and Porter WAGoner.
