Jack Swigert, the CLP of Apollo 13, was a test pilot for North American Aviation and worked on the Rogallo Wing project, which was a sort of two-lobed sail that popped out from the spacecraft so it could glide to a landing. The idea was to get away from costly and dangerous splashdowns, and make vehicles reusable. It didn’t work, but a small-scale vehicle was built and flew somewhat successfully too late in the program to actually be tested on a mission. Swigert was elected to Colorado congress but died before he could take office. His statue is in B Concourse down where you get the train to move between terminals and baggage claim. How astronomers found Neptune! Studying what we can see in space tells us a lot about what we can’t see. That’s true for finding exoplanets, studying dark matter, and it’s how astronomers found Neptune right in our own backyard. And also Pluto! Studying meteors and planets got astronomers looking for a theoretical Planet X beyond Neptune that might be influencing these bodies, and Clyde Tombaugh finally found it in 1929 using a blink comparator; he found one tiny dot moving against the “fixed” stars and we got Pluto! Recounting one of my favourite unexpected finds from my second book! I loved getting into Jackie and LBJ’s friendship, especially with moments like these. There’s a great finish to this story, too — when LBJ was elected, a journalist asked him who he felt had made the greatest contribution to his campaign and he answered, “a woman… not my wife!” Fighting for Space is available however you like to consume books!
