The excuse given was that she had posted a controversial story on Instagram which violated the company’s policy. However, the story was one that the ABC had already reported on, and leaked messages show that the ABC had actually been pressured by an influential lobby group to fire her because of her stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict. It is up to large media companies like the ABC not to cave to pressures – otherwise how can the public trust them? This mural came about because of the current Israel-Palestine conflict so here are my long-overdue but brief thoughts about what’s going on. What Hamas is doing is terrible. What the Israeli government is doing is terrible. Palestinian people are innocent. Israeli people are innocent. People can (and do) argue all day about “what should have happened” or “what might happen”. All that matters RIGHT NOW IN THIS MOMENT is that the Israeli government, with the backing of a world superpower, is indiscriminately murdering so many innocent children – and it has the potential to be stopped. Ceasefire now. That is my stance. Supporting Palestinian people is not the same thing as supporting Hamas. Being against the Israeli government is not the same thing as being against Jewish people. Anyone who is equating the two needs to stop. Antisemitism and racism are real and are on the rise because of this war. This is not okay. That is also my stance.”
